Hoops roundup: Catholic boys rally past Wirt, 48-46

ELIZABETH — Parkersburg Catholic rallied to erase a three-point halftime deficit and held on for a 48-46 win over Wirt County Wednesday.

The visiting Crusaders (2-0) trailed 23-20 at the break and 34-33 after three, outscoring the Tigers (2-1) 15-12 over the final eight minutes to claim the victory.

Jayden Walker led a balanced Crusader attack with 12 points, followed by 11 from Luke Anderson, nine from Preston Randolph, eight from Leonardo DeAngelo and six from Branson Lott. Head coach Jim McLean’s squad plays host to Calhoun County Friday.

Wirt, which visits Richwood Friday, was led by Braylan Dawson’s game-high 14 points. Braxton Dennis added 11 points while Tyler Smith finished with nine points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Alex Bevel tallied eight points and six boards while Jake Moore also grabbed six caroms.

Monroe Central 54, Waterford 41

WATERFORD — Waterford gave defending state champion Monroe Central a battle Tuesday night at the Harry Cooper Annex, but the Seminoles ultimately remained undefeated with a 54-41 victory.

The Wildcats (2-3) trailed 22-17 at halftime but got outscored 15-9 in the third quarter to see their deficit increase double figures heading into the final eight minutes.

Finn Pennock led the hosts with 18 points. Gavin Hiener added nine, Reese Lang tallied eight and Weston Fairchild netted six.

Corbin Farnsworth scored a game-high 19 points for the visitors. Cooper Howell added 16 for Monroe Central, which improved to 5-0 and heads to Shenandoah Friday. Caedyn Silva added nine points for the ‘Noles while Blake Yontz chipped in seven.

Waterford will travel to Ironton Friday.
