WAYNE — The old adage about the tortoise and the hare ends with slow and steady winning the race. It doesn’t hurt when the side going steady also has speed.
Williamstown piled up 500 yards of total offense, including 382 on the ground Friday, as the Yellowjackets used a steady effort to defeat host Wayne 46-26.
The Yellowjackets took off at the end of the first half. Wayne was trailing 16-12 but was driving inside the final four minutes deep in Williamstown territory. However, a Wayne fumble, followed by a quick Yellowjacket touchdown drive, created a 24-12 halftime lead, and provided the separation needed.
“I thought we wore on them a little bit,” Williamstown coach Chris Beck said. “I thought we were physical and the point of attack and finished runs. I was real proud of how we played up front.”
The Jackets mixed the running game, with senior Jackson Kerr rushing for 174 yards and four touchdowns and quarterback Breck Allen adding 116 yards rushing.
Wayne (3-6) got 160 yards on the ground and three scores from Kaiden Hayton. The Pioneers had 200 yards rushing at half, but slowed to 100 more after halftime.
Williamstown (4-5) is trying to make the playoffs for a 26th straight season. The Jackets need a win and help in Week 11.
“The only thing we can control is going out there and winning next week,” Beck said. “What we can control is having a great week of practice and go execute next Friday.”
Calhoun 41, Webster 28
MT. ZION — Chase Schoolcraft returned two interceptions and a punt for touchdowns while Brennen Carpenter found the end zone three times in the second half to help lead Calhoun County past Webster County 41-28 Friday.
The Red Devils improved to 3-6 with a trip to Ritchie County slated for next week to cap off the regular season. The last time Calhoun won more than two games in a season was 2015. This was also CCHS’s first win over Webster since 1984.
Schoolcraft’s first of two pick-sixes and his 58-yard punt return for a TD had the Red Devils up 13-6 in the second, but a pair of touchdown passes from Isaiah Cutlip to Ryder Wright had the Highlanders ahead 20-13 at halftime.
Calhoun bounced back in the third quarter, outscoring WCHS 20-0 in the period thanks to two Carpenter TD runs and Schoolcraft’s second pick-six, making it 33-20.
Carpenter scored again early in the fourth to make it a 21-point game.
With 16 seconds left on the clock, Wright scored on a 7-yard run for the final TD of the night.
Webster out-gained Calhoun 331-238 in the contest, but lost the turnover battle 5-0.
Cutlip was 7 for 19 for 137 yards passing and was picked off four times — once by Rome Riddel and once by Charter Cottrell. Wright carried 13 times for 120 yards and had four receptions for 101 yards. Eli Amos added 67 yards and a TD on 13 rushes.
Carpenter led Calhoun with 92 yards on 22 carries and was 5 for 10 passing for 85 yards.
Magnolia 42, Valley 14
PINE GROVE — Kingston Christen threw three touchdown passes, ran for another and surpassed 1,000 yards passing for the season in Magnolia’s 42-14 win over Valley Friday.
The Blue Eagles (2-7), who have won two straight after starting the season 0-7, wrap things up next week when Clay-Battelle invades.
Christen completed 12 of 17 passes for 207 yards and had two TD passes to Lucas Anderson (5 catches, 113 yards) and another to Finn Loy (5 catches, 74 yards. He also ran for a 1-yard score.
Greg Moore, who led MHS with 68 yards on five carries, found the zone on runs of 6 and 41 yards.
The Lumberjacks (0-9) saw both their touchdowns come on 1-yard runs by Koleton Kincaid.
Magnolia led 20-0 after one and 34-6 at halftime.
Doddridge 53, Lincoln 20
WEST UNION — Brandon Davis scored three touchdowns to help lead Doddridge County to a 53-20 win over Lincoln Friday as DCHS is now one win away from a perfect regular season.
The Cougars (4-5) got on the board first when AJ Bart threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Bart, but the Bulldogs (9-0) scored the next 20 points on touchdown runs by Davis and Caleb Hall and a 58-yard TD pass from Brysen Dixon to Jerod Trent.
Cade Riley’s 2-yard TD catch from AJ Bart got Lincoln with six, but Doddridge saw Dixon throw a 34-yard TD pass to Davis and Caleb Hall throw a 25-yard TD pass to Landon Thomas to make it 34-14 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Brycen Eidel and Lyric Blake ran for touchdowns for DCHS. AJ Bart then threw his third touchdown pass of the day to Colton Edwards, but Doddridge still led 47-20 at the end of three.
Davis scored from a yard out at the 10:30 mark in the fourth for the final touchdown of the night.
Eidel (4-76), Hall (10-75) and Blake (7-71) all eclipsed 70 rushing yards in the game. Dixon was 8 for 10 passing for 215 yards. Trent caught two passes for 95 yards.
For Lincoln, AJ Bart was 20 for 35 passing for 191 yards. His top target was Jacob Bart (7-83).
Doddridge visits Mingo Central next week in a massive Class AA showdown.
Ritchie 48, Ravenswood 22
RAVENSWOOD — Kellen Cress returned an interception for a touchdown and caught two TD passes in Ritchie County’s 48-22 win over Ravenswood Friday.
Turner Shriver, who was 7 for 14 passing for 177 yards, ran for a 22-yard TD to open the scoring. Cress then had a 46-yard pick-six and caught a 46-yard TD pass from Shriver to make it 22-0 at halftime.
Jacob Burgess’s 24-yard scoring scamper got RHS on the board in the third, but Carter Satterfield (13-yard run), Hunter McCray (64-yard run) and Cress (38-yard pass from Shriver) all found the end zone as part of a 20-0 run by RCHS to put the game out of reach.
Ralphie Rhodes, who led all rushers with 138 yards on 16 carries, scored once on a 15-yard pass from Owen Curtis and again on a 5-yard run in the fourth, but it was too little, too late.
Satterfield led the Rebels with 134 yards on 14 carries while Isaiah Poole, who had a 13-yard touchdown run in the fourth, added 110 yards on 10 attempts. Hunter McCray had 62 yards on just two carries as Ritchie amassed 393 yards on 33 carries and 570 total yards of offense. Cress had three catches for 84 yards while Jenner Keen caught three balls for 81 yards.
Curtis rushed for 33 yards and was 10 for 13 passing for 92 yards for Ravenswood, which will look to avoid an 0-10 season when it plays host to South Harrison next week.
The Rebels (3-6) close the regular season at home against Calhoun.
