Prep football roundup: Ritchie pulls away from Gilmer

ELLENBORO — Carter Satterfield scored three touchdowns to help lead Ritchie County to its first win of the season, a 40-12 triumph over visiting Gilmer County Friday.

Kellen Cress, Ashton Byrd and Isaiah Poole each found paydirt once for the Rebels, who improved to 1-4 and play host to Wahama next week.

Satterfield carries 12 times for 125 yards and two TDs while catching three passes for 58 yards and another score. Poole finished with 77 yards on 15 carries while Turner Shriver added 82 yards on eight attempts. Shriver was also 9 for 11 through the air for 152 yards, including a 36-yard scoring strike to Satterfield. Landen Hanlon led all receivers with 65 yards on four receptions.

RCHS scored the first 34 points of the game to take total control.

Gilmer found the end zone twice in the final period to take some momentum into next week’s home game against St. Marys. Tyler Ratliff had a 1-yard TD run before Roddick Page threw an 18-yard TD pass to Ashton Hamric.

Ritchie out-gained Gilmer 519-198.

Buffalo 63, Calhoun County 26

MT. ZION — Buffalo quarterback Hunter Rutan put up video game numbers to help lead the Bison to a 63-26 win over Calhoun County Friday.

Rutan threw seven touchdown passes to seven different receivers and went 29 for 41 for 479 yards. Nathan Harris, Grant Webb, Caleb Cales, Grant Weaver, Noah Randolph, Jacob Cossin and Caleb Sizemore all caught TD passes. Harris led the way with 172 yards on nine catches. Weaver added 95 yards on six receptions.

Camryn Bonnett led the Buffalo rushing attack with 129 yards on 14 attempts. Bonnett scored on touchdown runs of 2 and 12 yards.

Calhoun (1-5) cut it to 20-7 in the second quarter when Rome Riddel scored a 19-yard rushing touchdown, but the Bison scored 22 unanswered to go into halftime up 42-7.

The Red Devils, who visit Clay County next week, got a 10-yard rushing touchdown from Chase Schoolcraft and an 18-yard TD pass from Brenne Carpenter to Gavin Hicks in the second half.

Carpenter paced CCHS with 146 yards on 25 carries and went 7 for 17 passing for 83 yards. Charter Cottrell also eclipsed the 100-yard mark, carrying 14 times for 106 stripes.

Tyler Consolidated 35, Magnolia 0

NEW MARTINSVILLE — Tyler Consolidated’s defense pitched a shutout and Gideon Winfrey rushed for 132 yards and scored three total touchdowns as the Silver Knights claimed a 35-0 win over Magnolia Friday.

Tyler evened its record at 3-3 going into the team’s off week. The Knights will play Oak Glen on Oct. 17 at home.

Winfrey, who needed just nine carries to reach his production, scored thrice in the first half on runs of 20 and 13 yards plus a 42-yard catch from Reese Davis. Davis also found the end zone himself on a 2-yard run, making the score 28-0 at halftime.

Tyler found the end zone one last time in the fourth quarter when Ashton Morris threw a 25-yard TD pass to Davis.

Davis finished with 11 carries for 61 yards, one catch for 25 yards and completed 4 of 7 passes for 87 yards. Morris added 4 completions on 6 attempts for 75 yards. Cam Strode led Tyler in receiving with 78 yards on three receptions. Strode also had an interception on defense.

Conotton Valley 54, Frontier 34

BOWERSTON, Ohio — Austyn Kephart found the end zone four times for Frontier, but the Cougars couldn’t stop Conotton Valley’s offensive attack in Friday’s 54-34 loss.

Gavin Haney carried 15 times for 200 yards and matched Kephart’s TD total. CVHS quarterback Caden Leggett went 16 for 34 for 271 yards with TDs to Haney, Camden Wright and RJ Higgenbotham. Higgenbotham’s TD catch was a 99-yarder with 47 seconds left in the first half, putting Frontier down 28-14 at the break.

Leggett was intercepted twice, once apiece by Brayden Boron and Hunter Taylor.

The Cougars, who fell to 2-5 and play host to Magnolia next week, got within eight on Kephart’s fourth TD of the day, a 1-yard run which occurred at the 8:54 mark in the fourth, but Haney scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and Wright had a 1-yard scoring rush in the final period to close it out.

Caleb Kirkpatrick, who had a 48-yard touchdown run in the fourth, led the Cougars with 72 yards on 15 carries. Aaden Bills completed 17 of 28 passes for 277 yards and two TDs, both to Kephart, who had seven catches for 98 yards. Avery Powell led all receivers with 117 yards on four receptions.
