Game notes: Ranked No. 1 entering last week’s matchup with Martinsburg, the Mohigans managed just two field goals against the Bulldogs. The first field goal resulted when Morgantown had the ball at the Martinsburg 1 with shortly before halftime. A false start penalty backed up the Mohigans and they had to settle for three points. The previous week in a win against Wheeling Park, Morgantown running back Zaiiden Lockett rushed for a team-high 81 yards with two touchdowns, while quarterback Maddox Twigg threw for 191 yards and a pair of TDs. After snapping a five-game losing streak dating back to last year’s first round playoff game, South has emerged with two convincing wins – first against John Marshall then last week against Hurricane as quarterback Kinzyn Lutchmansingh threw for 349 yards and six TDs. Morgantown leads the series between the two schools, 14-6, with the last four meetings being decided by two touchdowns or fewer.

Game notes: The Knights of first-year head coach Eric Fetty have just one victory, but check in at No. 16 in the latest Class AAAA ratings.

“We haven’t beat them as a program since 2011, so that says a lot about the consistency of their program over the last 15 years,” admitted PHS head man Matt Kimes.

“Our kids know that and we want to end that streak Friday. It’s also senior night, so it would be good to send those kids out with a win if it is their last home game.”

The No. 10 Big Reds will be out to stop a two-game slide before heading to Ripley and Herbert Hoover to conclude the regular season before having a bye in week 11.

“Midland is huge upfront and will run the ball 90% of the time,” added Kimes. “We are going to stack the box and get as many hats to the point of contact as possible. If we can win first and second downs and get them in third and longs that will be to our advantage.

“Offensively, we need to be efficient with our possessions because their style of offense is ball control, milk the clock type scheme, so the times we have the ball might be limited. We need to move the chains and take what they are giving us.”

Gilmer County has six different players with a sack apiece. Huffman leads the Titans with two interceptions and Drayden Shackleford has a pair of fumble recoveries.

This is the sixth straight meeting in a series that started back in 2020.

The Red Devils’ lone win versus Valley came in 2021, 28-6.

WILLIAMSTOWN AT SOUTH HARRISON

Williamstown and Poca met on an annual basis from 2006-2012. All told, the Yellowjackets are 9-0 against the Dots. BRAXTON AT DODDRIDGE

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Did not meet.

Braxton County (3-4): lost to South Harrison 23-15; def. Gilmer County 49-12; lost to Midland Trail 35-0; def. Ritchie County 16-6; lost to Roane County 46-20; def. Poca 34-14; lost to Buffalo 19-16

Doddridge County (6-0): def. Liberty Raleigh 41-6; def. Ritchie County 48-0; def. Tyler Consolidated 47-6; def. Ravenswood 47-0; def. Petersburg 21-7; def. South Harrison 34-8

Key Braxton County players: Logan Payne (RB), Landon Mays (QB), James Nettles

Key Doddridge County players: Brycen Dixon (QB), Landon Thomas (WR/DE), Lyric Blake (RB/DB)

Game notes: Combined with the 2024 season, Doddridge County is riding a winning streak of seven straight regular season games.

The Bulldogs are coming off a game of would of, could of after losing at home to Buffalo. The Eagles turned the ball over six times (5 fumbles, 1 interception) and led 16-11 midway into the third quarter. In that game, Braxton’s Logan Payne rushed for a team-high152 yards and one TD, while the passing attack was non-existent with quarterback Landon Mays completing 2-of-6 passes for 14 yards. Referees may have their work cut out since the two schools have the same green and yellow color scheme. Braxton and Doddridge first met in 1969 and played on an annual basis until 2002. Now they meet again with Doddridge holding a 17-15-2 edge in the all-time series. Braxton is seeking its first playoff appearance since 2020.

OAK GLEN AT TYLER

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Tyler Consolidated 55, Oak Glen 7

Oak Glen (6-1): def. Weir 32-14; def. St. Marys 53-18; def. Belpre 43-0; lost to Toronto (Ohio) 26-0; def. Buckeye Local (Ohio)) 17-0; def. Steubenville Central Catholic 28-0; def. Bridgeport (Ohio) 56-3

Tyler Consolidated (3-3): def. Ritchie County 38-14; lost to Wahama 28-13; lost to Doddridge County 47-6; def. Cameron 14-12; def. Magnolia 35-0

Key Oak Glen players: Logan Murray (RB/CB), Maddon Bowen (QB/FS)

Key Tyler Consolidated players: Reese Davis (QB/MLB), Gideon Winfrey (RB/OLB), Brayden Neff (RB), Caden Hall (RB)

Game notes: Oak Glen has completely turned around their misfortunes from recent years. With only four wins combined over the past three seasons, Oak Glen needs just one win to surpass the program’s win total from the past four seasons. Tyler and Oak Glen met last year for the first time since 2015. Oak Glen leads the series 9-6. Tyler is seeking to advance to the postseason for the fourth straight season.

RITCHIE AT TYGARTS VALLEY

Last year’s result: Ritchie 63, Tygarts Valley 20

Ritchie County (1-5): lost to Tyler Consolidated 38-14; lost to Doddridge County 48-0; lost to South Harrison 60-34; lost to Braxton County 16-6; def. Gilmer County 40-12; lost to Wahama 53-8

Tygarts Valley (2-5): def. Valley (Wetzel) 54-13; lost to Tucker County 50-0; lost to Webster County 16-14; lost to Bath County (Va.) 53-22; lost to Pendleton County 59-0; def. Richwood 29-12; lost to East Hardy 52-6

Key Tygarts Valley players: Connor Rose(RB/FS), Austin Gear, Adam Woods, Jacob Wamsley (RB/DE)

Game notes: Tygarts enters with the better record, but both wins have occurred against winless teams Valley (Wetzel) and (Richwood). Five years removed from a playoff appearance, Tygarts has a combined total of 10 wins. Against Richwood, Tygarts rallied by scoring the final 15 points of the game. In that contest, Austin Gears rushed for a team-high 122 yards, while Jacob Wamsley had two TDs. Last year marked the first meeting between Ritchie and Tygarts.

MAGNOLIA AT ST. MARYS

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: St. Marys 41, Magnolia 8

Magnolia (0-6): lost to Wirt, 47-12; lost to River, 42-0; lost to Bridgeport (Ohio), 42-18; lost to Monroe Central, 47-12; lost to Tyler Consolidated, 35-0; lost to Frontier, 34-22

St. Marys (4-2): d. Ravenswood, 13-0; lost to Oak Glen, 53-18; lost to Cameron, 40-2; d. Webster, 49-18; d. Frontier, 37-14; d. Gilmer, 42-20

Key Magnolia players: RB Hunter Cooley; QB Finn Loy; RB Ethaniel Harlan

Key St. Marys players: RB Eli Wilson; RB Eli Cox; QB Jeremiah DeMoss

Game notes: Coming off its most competitive game of the season, a 34-22 loss at Frontier, Magnolia is looking to knock off the red-hot St. Marys Blue Devils this Friday.

SMHS has won three games in a row by an average margin of victory of 25.3 points.

The Blue Devils have found a ton of offensive success by feeding the ball to running backs Eli Wilson and Eli Cox.

Look for the Blue Eagles to lean on tailback Hunter Cooley, who put up 194 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries last week.

BELPRE AT EASTERN

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Eastern 55, Belpre 13

Belpre (2-6): lost to Fisher Catholic, 47-12; d. Federal Hocking, 34-6; lost to Alexander, 49-6; lost to Oak Glen, 43-0; d. Green, 56-0; lost to Steubenville Catholic Central, 51-18; lost to Trimble, 44-0; lost to Southern, 41-8

Eastern (4-3): d. Meigs, 23-19; d. Wirt County, 47-13; lost to South Gallia, 22-21; d. Federal Hocking, 50-16; lost to Waterford, 28-13; lost to Wahama, 27-10; d. Trimble, 35-6

Key Belpre players: RB Alex Parker; QB Malik Currie; WR Malakai Ensor

Key Eastern players: RB Ethan Edwards; RB Parker Durst; LB Ronnie Golden; OL/DL Mason Shepherd

Game notes: Every game is a big one at this point for Eastern as the Eagles are clinging to the 12th and final playoff spot in Region 23.

The Eagles bounced back from two competitive losses in a row with a convincing 35-6 win over Trimble last week. Eastern should be able to continue to run the ball effectively against a Belpre team that has surrendered 41 or more points in three straight games.

WARREN AT FORT FRYE

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Warren 28, Fort Frye 6

Warren (2-6): lost to Circleville, 16-15; lost to Morgan, 28-13; d. Logan, 27-21 (OT); lost to Independence, 35-0; lost to Union Local, 35-0; lost to Athens, 44-7; lost to John Marshall, 30-27; d. Point Pleasant, 35-24

Fort Frye (6-1): lost to Barnesville, 35-7; d. West Muskingum, 36-7; d. Wheeling Central, 40-0; d. Waterford, 28-0; d. Caldwell, 31-7; d. Greenbrier West, 55-0; d. Marietta, 35-0

Key Warren players: WR Tanner Pepper; QB Declan Johnson; LB Tyler Plummer

Key Fort Frye players: FB/LB Kainan Bradford; OL/LB Blake Wheeler; RB Sam Bricker

Game notes: Fort Frye can put itself in the driver’s seat in the Twin State League with a win against Warren this week.

Last year, the Warriors upset the Cadets 28-6 and ended up claiming the league title. Fort Frye will seek a different result this time around.

FFHS is led by a defense that hasn’t surrendered a point to an opposing offense since week two. The Cadets shut down a run-heavy Marietta squad in a 35-0 win last week.

The Warriors shook off a heart-breaking loss to John Marshall two weeks ago and took care of business against Point Pleasant. Tanner Pepper has done a little bit of everything for Warren this season, and will need to have another big game this week against a stingy Fort Frye defense.

SHENANDOAH AT FRONTIER

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: did not meet

Shenandoah (4-4): lost to Edison, 35-14; lost to Bridgeport (Ohio), 22-20; lost to Waterford, 49-0; d. Buckeye Trail, 28-8; d. Trimble, 36-6; d. Shadyside, 30-12; lost to Monroe Central, 35-12; d. River, 33-0

Frontier (3-5): d. Bridgeport (Ohio), 36-13; lost to Miller, 20-14; lost to Clay-Battelle, 42-20; lost to Shadyside, 13-6; d. Valley (Wetzel), 52-8; lost to St. Marys, 37-14; lost to Conotton Valley, 54-34; d. Magnolia, 34-22

Key Shenandoah players: QB Ethan Brown; WR Ethan Cutlip; RB Caden VanFossen

Key Frontier players: WR Austyn Kephart; RB Caleb Kirkpatrick; QB Aaden Bills

Game notes: This is a huge game for two teams on the outside looking in at the playoff picture in their respective regions.

Shenandoah has been playing well, winning four of its last five to rebound from an 0-3 start. The SHS defense pitched a shutout against River last week and will look to slow a Frontier offense that has scored 34 points each of the last two weeks.

The two squads have a pair of common opponents. Frontier defeated Bridgeport 36-13 in its season opener. The next week, Bridgeport defeated Shenandoah 22-20. However, Shenandoah also owns a 30-12 victory over Shadyside, a team the Cougars lost to 13-6.

TRIMBLE AT WATERFORD

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Waterford 14, Trimble 6

Trimble (5-3): lost to Nelsonville-York, 34-8; d. Berne Union, 36-0; d. Vinton County, 10-0; d. Wellston, 40-0; lost to Shenandoah, 36-6; d. Southern, 34-26; d. Belpre, 44-0; lost to Eastern, 35-6

Waterford (6-2): d. Vinton County, 50-12; d. Caldwell, 21-6; d. Shenandoah, 49-0; lost to Fort Frye, 28-0; lost to Nelsonville-York, 29-28; d. Eastern, 28-13; d. Southern, 47-0; d. Federal Hocking, 63-0

Key Trimble players: FB/OLB Luke Orsborne, RB/OLB Trevor Gowen, QB Paul Sharp

Key Waterford players: QB Trevin Zimmer; WR Weston Fairchild; OL/DL Cadon Riley

Game notes: After losing two in a row in weeks four and five, Waterford has won three straight and is seemingly getting better each week.

The Wildcats, who have recorded back-to-back shutouts on defense, have beaten two teams Trimble has lost to in Shenandoah and Eastern.

While the Tomcats are always a tough out, Waterford appears to have the edge on paper going into this one.

MARIETTA AT POINT PLEASANT

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Marietta 24, Point Pleasant 3

Marietta (1-7): lost to Morgan, 31-16; lost to John Marshall, 23-21; lost to Athens, 33-21; lost to Claymont, 12-0; lost to Whitehall-Yearling, 21-0; lost to Circleville, 41-21; d. Williamstown, 14-6; lost to Fort Frye, 35-0

Point Pleasant (0-6): lost to Fairland, 40-15; lost to Gallia Academy, 28-21; lost to Ripley, 42-23; lost to Herbert Hoover, 46-7; lost to Nitro, 56-13; lost to Warren, 35-24

Key Marietta players: RB/LB Will Tornes; RB/LB Kobe Alexander; FB/DL Zach Carver

Key Point Pleasant players: QB Caden Hill; WR Isaiah Waminam; WR Gavin Barnett

Game notes: Marietta’s pass defense will be put to the test this week against winless Point Pleasant.

The Big Blacks saw quarterback Caden Hill throw for 344 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s loss to Warren. Hill, a dual threat, also ran for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Marietta’s defense has played well at times this season and will look to slow PPHS’s air attack.

Starting at $2.99/week.
