Wood County middle school runners compete in cross country championships

MINERAL WELLS — Here Tuesday evening during the 21st annual Wood County middle school cross country championships Edison eighth grader Jett Hines nearly broke the meet record of 9 minutes and 20 seconds held since 2017 by Wood County Christian’s Franklin Angelos.

Hines, who recently moved from Webster County and was the WSAZ 102-pound middle school wrestling champion, finished in 9:25. The Eagle, who just completed his first cross country season, was three seconds faster than Blennerhassett runner-up Slaten McLain. Angelos, an all-state standout at Parkersburg, is a senior at Ohio University.

The Bobcats rolled to their fifth consecutive team championship by defeating Hamilton, 30-62, as Joshua Eddy (3rd, 9:44), Brady Deuley (7th, 10:22), Lucas Spaur (8th, 10:23) and Joseph Maggard (10th, 10:27) accounted for the team scoring.

Also cracking the top 10 in the boys race were Jackson’s Harlan Wolfe (4th, 9:49) as well as Hamilton teammates Hendrix Greer (5th, 9:54) and Kellan Villareal (6th, 9:59). HMS also received scoring efforts from Connor Fleshman (15th, 10:55), Jett Jones (16th, 10:56) and Joey Kallner (22nd, 11:10).

Kinsely Elliott of Hamilton clocked in at 11:36, but had to settle for a runner-up effort behind Jackson’s Collins Rader, who defended her title by posting a victorious effort of 10 minutes and 43 seconds.

Blennerhassett boys

The Williamstown girls won their first team title since 2022 – 41 to 56 versus Blennerhassett – thanks to the efforts of Raeley Perdue (3rd, 11:48), Lily Cosper (5th, 11:50), Kendall Gant (6th, 12:06), Grace Boise (9th, 12:14) and Emma Casto (23rd, 13:11).

Other top 10 finishers for the girls featured Wood County Christian’s Handley Bryce (4th, 11:48), Blennerhassett’s Gwen Silvis (7th, 12:08), Edison’s Aven Pifer (8th, 12:09) and Bobcat Katherine Moyers (10th, 12:21).

Silvis and Moyers were joined in helping the Bobcats to a runner-up effort by teammates Genevieve Taylor (12th, 12:29), Olivia Snell (13th, 12:35) and Alizabeth-Ann Rickman (20th, 13:05).
