Glenville knocks off No. 21 Frostburg State, 19-13, in double-OT
FROSTBURG, Md. – Glenville State’s defense stood tall all afternoon here Saturday at Bobcat Stadium as the Pioneers got a 1-yard touchdown run from Jeremiah King to upset No. 21 Frostburg State, 19-13, in double-overtime.
The Mountain East Conference showdown was the first loss of the year for the Bobcats (5-1, 3-1), who had it fourth-and-goal on their first drive of the fourth quarter only to see tailback Daysen Shell stuffed for a 2-yard loss by Pioneer Eugene Allen.
With less than 6 minutes remaining in regulation, FSU kicker Harrison Fritz had his 48-yard field goal blocked by Kalon Curry.
The hosts, who head next Saturday to Charleston, had the ball in the red zone with less than 2 minutes to go in regulation, but Fritz’ 24-yard field goal went wide. Although the Pioneers (3-3, 2-1) moved the ball to the FSU 38 in the waning seconds, Anthony Garrett’s pass was intercepted by Wylan Harich in the end zone.
Brody Layman got Glenville State on the board in the first overtime with a 23-yard field goal, which was answered by Fritz’ 22-yarder.
FSU had the ball first in the second overtime and passed twice from the 2 on third and fourth down, as both of Myles Fulton’s attempts to connect with Tra’Shaun Timmons fell incomplete.
Garrett, who hit 13 of 29 for 245 yards and was picked off thrice, hit Tariq Miller with a 26-yard touchdown strike to open the scoring with 6:45 left in the half.
Although it appeared the G-men would head into the break with a 7-3 cushion, Fritz was roughed after making his field goal and the Bobcats ended up getting an 8-yard touchdown pass from Fulton to running back Owen Doyle, who rushed 22 times for a game-high 107 yards.
Both teams converted a field goal in the third with Fritz hitting from 25 yards away and Layman 23.
King carried 23 times and finished with 100 ground yards. Tariq Meredith finished with six receptions for a game-high 116 yards while Miller had four grabs for 91 stripes.
Fulton, who made a return from injury, completed half of his 38 attempts for 209 yards with Timmons (6-83) being his top target.
The Pioneers, who had double figure tackle efforts thanks to Sean Scott (12) and Brandon Penn (10) got nine stops from Shary Jefferson, which included 3.5 TFL. Elias Ofosu joined Scott with a pair of pass breakups.
The G-men are back in action at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for homecoming versus Concord at Summersville’s Memorial Stadium.
