Prep football roundup: Wildcats drop heart-breaker to Buckeyes, 29-28
NELSONVILLE, Ohio — Ryker Hutchins’ attempt at a 51-yard game-winning field goal had the distance, but went wide left as Waterford fell to Nelsonville-York 29-28 Friday night.
Cameron Sullivan connected with Alec Thompson for a 10-yard touchdown pass with a minute left to cut it to 28-27. The Buckeyes lined up to kick the extra point, but kicker Grant Elliott took the direct snap and hooked up with Thompson for two points to put Nelsonville-York in front 29-28.
At their own 31, the Wildcats watched Hayden Jones complete a 27-yard pass to Weston Fairchild to push the ball to Nelsonville-York’s 42-yard line with 11 seconds to go. Jones then ran 7 yards to the 35 to set up the try by Hutchins.
Waterford trailed early after Dakota Cunningham’s 3-yard touchdown run, but answered with 21 straight points.
Jones tied the game with a 27-yard TD burst and later gave the Wildcats a 14-7 lead when he threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Fairchild.
Trevin Zimmer hurdled a defender and found the end zone from 7 yards out to stretch Waterford’s lead to 21-7. That was the score at halftime.
The Buckeyes scored 14 straight points on a 19-yard touchdown run by Sullivan and a 13-yard TD pass from Sullivan to Levi Snedden to tie it at 21-all at the 11:16 mark in the fourth.
Waterford put together a nice go-ahead drive, capped by Jones’ 3-yard rushing TD, to make it 28-21 with 6:54 on the clock.
Jones finished with 171 yards on 23 carries. He was 7 for 14 passing for 108 yards and two interceptions. Fairchild had two catches for 70 yards.
Braxton 16, Ritchie 6
SUTTON — Up 9-6 late in the fourth quarter Friday, Braxton County delivered the dagger in the form of a 13-yard touchdown run by Jackson Lewis to secure a 16-6 win over Ritchie.
The Eagles (2-2) led 6-0 after Landon Mays’ 1-yard touchdown run in the first and went into halftime up 9-0 when Zack McQuain drilled a 53-yard bomb of a field goal.
With 10:08 on the clock in the final period, Turner Shriver got the Rebels on the board with a 1-yard TD plunge, cutting it to 9-6.
However, Lewis scored with 3:04 remaining to all but seal the deal.
Mays finished 6 for 8 passing for 89 yards, with Jamie Nettles catching four of those balls for 71 yards.
Shriver led all rushers with 85 yards on 20 carries. He was just 5 for 15 passing for 29 yards. Isaiah Poole added 58 yards on 10 carries.
Ritchie dropped to 0-4 and gets a week off before heading to Gilmer on Oct. 3. Braxton plays host to Roane next week.
Doddridge 47, Ravenswood 0
RAVENSWOOD — After a five-touchdown performance last week, Lyric Blake added 234 yards and three more TDs in Friday’s 47-0 win over Ravenswood.
Blake had rushing scores of 40 and 55 yards and also caught a 15-yard TD pass from Brysen Dixon. Dixon also had a touchdown pass to Landon Thomas for 28 yards.
Doddridge, which is now 4-0 going into a bye week, also got two touchdown runs from Brandon Davis (5 and 10 yards) and a 55-yard pick-six from Josh Dehaven.
Blake did all his damage on just 10 carries. Davis added 60 yards on seven attempts and caught two passes for 64 yards. Dixon was 8 for 17 passing for 157 yards.
Ravenswood, which dropped to 0-4 and plays host to Sissonville next week, managed just 60 total yards of offense. Owen Curtis passed for 33 yards and Ralphie Rhodes had 27 rushing yards to lead the Red Devils.
Frontier 52, Valley (Wetzel) 8
PINE GROVE — What better way to snap a three-game losing skid than a 44-point blowout victory?
The Frontier Cougars got back on track with a 52-8 win over Valley (Wetzel) Friday to improve to 2-3. They’ll play host to St. Marys next week.
Caleb Kirkpatrick, who rushed nine times for 102 yards, had rushing touchdowns of 4 and 65 yards and also had a 65-yard TD catch.
Austyn Kephart ran for a 19-yard touchdown and caught a 39-yard TD pass from Aaden Bills, who went 7 for 13 for 169 yards in his first varsity start at QB. Bills also had a 22-yard rushing touchdown.
Rounding out the scoring for the Cougars, who amassed 397 total yards while limiting the Lumberjacks to 67, was Aiden Wolfe, who had a 40-yard pick-six.
Valley (0-3) got on the board late on Ryder Gravette’s 19-yard rushing touchdown.
