Game notes: Parkersburg South’s defense will attempt to duplicate what Greenbrier East did against Woodrow Wilson when the Flying Eagles turned the ball over on every second half possession until 26 seconds remained with Greenbrier East leading by 14 points. One turnover resulted in a 100-yard pick-six from Greenbrier East. Also last week, South outgained University, but allowed University touchdown runs of 45 and 35 yards in the fourth quarter. The Patriots, who have won the last six meetings with the Eagles, make their home debut on the newly-installed turf surface at Erickson All-Sports Facility.

PARKERSBURG AT HURRICANE

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last year’s score: Hurricane 49, PHS 14

PHS results (0-2): lost to Morgantown, 44-7; lost to Spring Valley, 30-20

HHS results (0-2): lost to George Rogers Clark (Ky.), 42-7; lost to George Washington, 45-12

Key PHS players: QB Alex Greer, RB Ethan Jones, LB Devin Widman, DL Adam Elder

Key HHS players: RB AJ Gregory, QB Isaiah Kutscher, K Seth Casto, WR Dylan Widen

Game notes: A healthy Parkersburg unit will hit the road this week for a Mountain State Athletic Conference showdown with fellow 0-2 program Hurricane.

“We’ve been grinding,” admitted PHS head coach Matt Kimes. “Obviously tough first game, really good opponent and didn’t play very well, but last week was one we felt like we let one slip away so to speak. Had our opportunities. We just made a couple self-inflicted mistakes that kind of turned the momentum and couldn’t get it going back the other way. A sense of urgency that we need to go win a football game.

“You don’t want to start 0-3. It’s not where we want to be at 0-2, but understand there’s still a whole lot of football season left. At the same time we got to start putting some W’s together so that we can get to where we want to be at the end of the season. We got to keep showing improvement. We showed improvement from week one to week two and we got to have a great week of practice and hopefully show improvement again this Friday.”

Big Red signal-caller Alex Greer rushed eight times for 134 yards while also completing 7 of 17 passes for 71 yards with a touchdown to Tytan Parsons during last week’s loss.

PHS running back Ethan Jones added 81 stripes on nine totes while the defense was led by Devin Widman’s dozen tackles along with Adam Elder’s seven stops, which included 2.5 tackles for loss.

“They got a new staff,” Kimes said of HHS first-year head man Dustin Hatfield. “A lot of new players. Their running back (AJ) Gregory, he’s a really good football player so we got to make sure we rally to him and try to keep him under grasps a little bit. The quarterback (Isaiah Kutscher) is elusive.

“A lot of people have been pressuring him and he’s getting a lot of pressure, but I think he’s only been sacked a couple of times. A lot of hurries. He’s a little bit elusive and keeps his eyes downfield and finds guys as scramble drill type scenarios. We’re going to work on that all week, but there’s some things we think we can do well against them.”

PHS won seven of eight to open a series which has seen the Redskins take three of the last four.

“They are 0-2 as well and it’s their first home game,” Kimes said. “We’re expecting them to be fired up to play.”

The teams haven’t met since 2019 and the Lumberjacks hold an 8-2 overall series edge.

Meanwhile, host River bolted out to a 14-0 lead in the first half for head coach Mike Flannery, but the Pilots failed to dent the scoreboard again as Monroe Central rallied for the 21-14 upset.

Wirt County found success on the ground last week and that should be a focal point for the Magnolia defense.

Stadler rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown while backfield mate Braden Johnson had the other six-pointer.

Magnolia, which has lost five straight to the Pilots, trails the series 25-29 in what will be the 55th all-time meeting.

RAVENSWOOD AT POCA

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s score: Did not meet.

RHS (0-2) results: lost to St. Marys, 13-0; lost to Ripley, 49-0

Key RHS players: QB/LB Owen Curtis, WR/DB Brandon Crow, OL/DL Hayden Heath, LB Jacob Burgess

Key PHS players: RB Jack McClanahan, QB Kam McBride, WR Nathan Christian, OL Daniel Burns

Game notes: Ravenswood, which is riding an 18-game losing streak, will meet Poca on the gridiron for the first time since the 2011 season.

RHS second-year head coach Matt Peery’s squad is still looking for its first touchdown of the season, but the Dots are coming off a 55-0 loss to Midland Trail.

In the opener, Poca got a big game from tailback Jack McClanahan during a blowout win against Buffalo.

“Couple tough injuries and tough breaks, but we have to execute better,” admitted coach Peery of the early going. “Kids are playing hard and improving daily, but not where we need to be yet. Culture and mentality are improving and something we focus on daily.

“Poca has several good athletes. McClanahan is a tough task no matter what position he is at. A threat to score from anywhere on the field.”

The Dots do own a 15-13-1 advantage in the series, but the Red Devils have won the last five meetings.

CLAY COUNTY AT ROANE COUNTY

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last year’s score: Roane County 47, Clay County 46

CCHS (1-1) results: lost to Midland Trail, 41-13; d. Buffalo, 44-14

RCHS (1-0) result: d. Greenbrier West, 67-16

Key CCHS players: QB Cooper Collins, RB Brody Scarbro, WR Jakoby Nichols, DL Jaden Morris

Key RCHS players: QB Jacob Greathouse, RB Koltyn Starcher, RB Brodey Proctor, RB Garrett Brabham

Game notes: Roane County will be looking for its 20th all-time win against Clay County in the 27th meeting when the two Little Kanawha Conference rivals clash with the Raiders trying to extend their winning streak to four in a row versus the Panthers.

A year ago, this game turned into a shootout in Clay with head coach Paul Burdette’s Raiders escaping with a one-point victory.

The Raiders will have to keep an eye on Panther signal-caller Cooper Collins, who hit 18 of 23 attempts for 261 yards and two touchdowns last week versus Buffalo. Clay County tailback Brody Scarbro rushed for 150 yards and a score while also catching a TD pass.

Roane County opened the season a week ago Saturday with a running clock victory versus Greenbrier West as the Raiders owned the game with their ground attack.

“It was different having an open week after week one, but we used it to fix some things from the West game,” admitted coach Burdette. “Clay is a good football team. Their line is experienced and talented.

“Multiple starters back at receiver. (Scarbro) is a big capable athlete that runs extremely hard and there is another Collins at quarterback who throws the ball very well.”

Burdette also added “defensively, they are attacking as always. it’s always a hard-fought game and I see no difference in this years.”

RIPLEY AT LINCOLN COUNTY

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last year’s score: Ripley 35, Lincoln County 6

RHS (1-1) results: lost to South Charleston, 27-23; d. Ravenswood, 49-0

LCHS (0-1) result: lost to Winfield, 55-8

Key RHS players: RB Cody Lawrence, OL Ryan Burdette, QB Jackson Moore, WR Parker Keller

Key LCHS players: RB Kody Adkins, QB Jack Shull, WR T.J. Ritchie, S Alex Banks

Game notes: Following a tough opening week setback to South Charleston, second-year head coach Ryan Simon’s Vikings bounced back with a 49-0 Hatchet game victory against Ravenswood, which set a new series record with their ninth consecutive triumph.

Now, the focus turns to a Lincoln County program which had a bye week following its lopsided week one defeat at the hands of Winfield.

Cody Lawrence had lots of running room last week as he went for 211 yards on 17 attempts. Jackson Moore hit 7 of 10 aerials for 192 yards with Parker Keller being his favorite target evidenced by three TD grabs and 134 yards receiving. Keller also made all four of his extra points and had a quartet of touchbacks.

“At the end of the day, it was great to get the win but we need to continue to improve,” admitted coach Simon. “I felt good about our effort and execution, but penalties continue to be a problem.

“I think we had 10 holding penalties and two touchdowns called back. We have to take care of the ball and reduce our penalties in the future.”

DODDRIDGE COUNTY at TYLER CONSOLIDATED

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Doddridge County 21, Tyler Consolidated 20

For the second straight week, the Bulldogs created little drama, Against Ritchie County, they led 48-0 by halftime with Brycen Eidel rushing for 117 yards on just six carries and scoring twice.DCHS allowed just one first down and 42 yards of Ritchie County offense. Caden Hall’s TD run at the end of the third quarter closed the White Falcon lead to 14-13. Key WCHS players: QB Tyler Smith, OL Braden Whipkey, RB Adryon Hartford, RB Anthony Morgan

Key CCHS players: QB Brennen Carpenter, RB Charter Cottrell, WR Gavin Hicks, WR Chase Schoolcraft

Game notes: Calhoun County’s 26-game losing skid is finally a thing of the past as third-year head coach Jeff Goodrich’s Red Devils now will try to start their first winning streak since the beginning of the 2015 campaign.

CCHS graduate Jason Hickman, who is in his second stint as the head man at Wirt County, picked up the Tigers’ first win last week versus Magnolia.

Friday night in Mt. Zion the two longtime rivals will meet for the 94th time as the orange and black hold a 46-33-4 edge in the overall series.

In the season-opener the Rebels stayed on even terms with Tyler Consolidated through three quarters at 14-14. South Harrison’s traditional run game churned out 306 yards in a season-opening win over Braxton County, including 132 yards and three touchdowns from Shepard Paugh. Key Shadyside players: RB Ace Nelson; DB Bryce Sloan; QB Jayden Johnson

The Cougars have dropped two games in a row to tough Miller and Clay-Battelle teams, while the Tigers are coming off a heart-breaking OT setback to Buckeye Local.

Both teams are led by talented running backs, as Frontier will lean on Caleb Kirkpatrick while Shadyside’s go-to guy is Ace Nelson. Whichever defense can prevent the opposing running back from hitting on big plays will have the advantage.

MARIETTA AT CLAYMONT

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Marietta 28, Claymont 13

Marietta (0-3): lost to Morgan, 31-16; lost to John Marshall, 23-21; lost to Athens, 33-21

Key Marietta players: WR/DB Owen Riley; RB/LB Kobe Alexander; WR/DE Braiden Plaugher

Key Claymont players: RB Nolan McMorrow; QB Carson Golec; WR Mason Bailey

Game notes: Marietta put together a promising rally against unbeaten Athens last week, but ultimately fell short. The Tigers have gotten better each week under first year head coach Mike Kupfner, and if that trend continues they’ll have a shot to finally get in the win column Friday at Claymont.

The Mustangs are no pushover, having claimed a pair of wins against Harrison Central and Fairless. They’ve relied on playmakers like Nolan McMorrow and Mason Bailey offensively, plus quarterback Carson Golec. Last week, their defense limited the Falcons to just six points.

If Marietta can establish the ground game with Kobe Alexander, and the defense can come up with a couple of turnovers, the Tigers will have a great shot to return home with a victory.

INDEPENDENCE AT WARREN

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: did not meet

Independence (2-0): d. Herbert Hoover 37-34; d. Martins Ferry 35-14

Key Independence players: QB Brock Green; RB Sylas Nelson; K Micah Cuthbert

Key Warren players: QB Tanner Pepper; RB Eric Carr; TE Jayce Hilverding

Game notes: Warren is in the win column after surviving 27-21 in overtime against Logan last week. Tanner Pepper, one of the state’s top receivers who is the acting quarterback with Braylon Murray injured, had a big game against the Chieftains. Pepper had 71 yards and three rushing touchdowns, including the game-winner from 20 yards out. Eric Carr led all ball-carriers with 140 yards on 19 attempts.

The Warriors will need another massive week from those two guys, plus some breakout performances from other guys, as 2-0 Independence comes to town.

The Patriots are averaging 36 points per game through two weeks, with quarterback Brock Green and running back Sylas Nelson leading the offense.

It will be a major test for Warren’s defense.

Starting at $2.99/week.
