Parkersburg High School experiences upgrade at Berlin Bear Den Dash

DELAWARE, Ohio – Parkersburg’s No. 4 Class AAAA boys cross country team and the fifth-ranked girls took a step up in competition here Saturday during the Berlin Bear Den Dash.

Juniors Morgan Metz (14th, 18:29) and Audrey Wagoner (47th, 19:34) led the Big Reds to a 14th place finish out of 40 teams.

Olivia Carpenter (86th, 20:16), Brie Winans (96th, 20:27) and Seneca Lang (125th, 21:16) accounted for the scoring.

The boys faced a field of 42 and finished in 25th with seniors Connor George (22nd, 15:55) and Ricardo Salazar (107th, 17:08) leading the way with Carter Thorpe (123rd, 17:18), Calvin Lantz (154th, 17:43) and Drake Rollins (155th, 17:45) following.

Coyote Classic

NEW MARTINSVILLE – Amos Kimble and Travis Moore had another 1-2 finish as Tyler Consolidated held off Ritchie County, 31-35, to win Saturday’s Coyote Classic at the Wetzel County 4-H Grounds.

Kimble (15:16) and Moore (15:56) were followed in the top five by Magnolia’s Riley Dennis (16:42) and Rebel teammates Jenner Stewart (15:57) and Kenson Roman (17:12).

Ritchie County’s Bentlee Williams (19:48) topped North Marion’s Jadyn Duncan (21:04), but the Huskies edged the Rebels, 40-42.

Tyler Consolidated’s Lily Haught (22:14) and Amber Ebert (22:49) rounded out the top five along with Indian Creek’s Calista Cozart (23:26).

Covered Bridge Invite

RIPLEY – Herbert Hoover’s Maysen Fletcher sped to a victorious time of 18 minutes and one second as the Huskies nipped Parkersburg South, 40-46, to win Saturday’s Ripley Covered Bridge Invitational at Cedar Lakes.

The race for runner-up was a photo finish with Ravenswood’s Riley Sotomayor nipping Patriot Alyssa McCrady – 21:12.6 to 21:12.7.

Parkersburg South also received scoring runs from Haley Raper (5th, 21:38), Sophia Shamblin (14th, 22:45), Lexi McKinney (16th, 23:03) and Isabella Ferrell (17th, 23:12).

Red Devil Gwyn Gorrell finished in 10th with a time of 22 minutes and 11 seconds.

Also leading their teams on Saturday were Ripley’s Lanie Knopp (11th, 22:12), Wood County Christian’s Amber Perkins (13th, 22:43), Wirt County’s Skylie Thompson (18th, 23:20), Calhoun County’s Paige Sterns (26th, 23:47) and Roane County’s Addie Taylor (34th, 24:41).

The Woodrow Wilson boys posted a 61-77 win versus George Washington as Flying Eagle Kyle Peters topped Parkersburg South runner-up Gatlin McLain – 16:23 to 17:03.

Three other area runners garnered top 10 efforts in Wirt County’s Matthew Balis (4th, 17:20), Wood County Christian’s Koa Navarro (5th, 17:25) and Ravenswood’s Gavin Wilburn (9th, 17:49).

The host Vikings were led by Eli Casto’s clocking of 18 minutes and 8 seconds, which was good for 15th.

Other area top efforts for their schools included Calhoun County’s Jackson Clawson (39th, 19:48), Gilmer County’s Tanner Facemire (89th, 25:12) and Roane County’s Brandon Charles (91st, 25:47).
