Landen Deuley’s 4 goals propel PHS past South

PARKERSBURG — If two words could describe Parkersburg High School’s boys key to winning, they would be speed and effectiveness.

The Parkersburg South Patriots fell victim to a fierce and precise offensive attack by the Big Reds on Tuesday at the Erickson All-Sports Facility, giving up a 6-2 loss and dropping the team to a 2-7 record on the year.

Nine minutes into the match, Parkersburg South’s Zachary Farnsworth would score the game’s first goal after a swift march down field by the Patriots offense making the score 1-0. This would however be Parkersburg South’s only lead of the game, with the Patriots giving up a goal to Parkersburg’s Landen Deuley, his first of four goals on the day.

“We prepared for this game all week following our loss to Spring Valley,” Deuley said. “We decided to lock in and practice harder than we have all year, and it showed in both the team’s performance and mine.”

With an overwhelming gift of speed and aggressiveness, Deuley proved to be the key benefactor of the Big Red’s attack, scoring four of the team’s six goals while singlehandedly manhandling any defensive effort the Patriots would attempt to throw at him.

“We let them dictate play the entire game,” Parkersburg South coach Rick George said. “I’ve seen this team perform at a higher level than what we showcased tonight, I think the problem was we kind of just got into a game of kick and chase”

Four minutes before halftime, Deuley would drive the ball down the field by himself to score the second Big Red goal of the evening and setting the tone for the rest of the match going forward.

Not even four minutes after his second goal, Deuley would earn himself a hat-trick with his third goal of the match to give the Big Reds a 3-1 lead going into the half, showcasing a well-structured system that put a focus on speed and precision.

“We worked hard as a team and followed our gameplan, and that is the method we have to use to win more going forward,” Parkersburg’s coach Ben Jones said.

The Big Reds would strike again not even two minutes after half with a short goal by team captain Oliver Cartwright, boosting the Big Reds’ lead to 4-1.

The Patriots had only attempted two shots on the goal throughout the first 59 minutes of the match, ending the game with only four compared to Parkersburg’s 14, a testament to the lackluster production that plagued the Patriots throughout the entire game.

“I don’t know if it’s just the situation of a rivalry game or what it was, but we need to fix things soon if we want to win soon,” said George.

Parkersburg South would eventually score their second and last goal with a Connor Roberts assist to give Rigo Amezquita the opportunity to move the score to 4-2.

Parkersburg’s Jack McLean would answer back almost immediately with a perfectly precise kick from just outside the penalty box to increase the Big Reds’ lead to 5-2.

With 28 minutes left in the match, Deuley would dash down the field with blazing speed to give the Big Reds one last score, making the score 6-2 and effectively sealing the Patriots’ fate for the night.

“Attitude and effort is what we preach over here,” Jones said. “Determination is what Parkersburg High School Soccer should represent, and I feel we represented that quite well tonight.”

The Big Reds will hope to capitalize over this rivalry win when they travel to face St. Albans on the 23rd, while the Patriots will attempt to gather their forces to bounce back against Poca High School away Thursday.
