Catholic volleyball falls to South Harrison
LOST CREEK, W.Va. — The players and coaches of South Harrison High School’s volleyball team may never have heard of the 1970s singing duo Sonny and Cher.
But they would quickly convert if they ever heard the duo’s hit single, “The Beat Goes On”.
Behind the standout play of sophomores Gabby Davis and Kennedy Southern the Hawks raised its season mark to 5-0 following a pair of two set wins over Parkersburg Catholic and Notre Dame.
“Tonight, we worked as a team,” SHSH head coach Breanna Sears explained. “I felt that they were focused and worked well together.”
South Harrison, which will look for win number six tonight when Little Kanawha Conference foe Calhoun County pays a visit, opened the evening with a straight set, 25-8, 25-11, win over the Crusaderettes.
The Hawks jumped out to a 8-4 lead before Southern went to the service line and scored 12 straight points (5 aces) to give the host a 20-4 edge enroute to taking the first set by a 25-8 margin.
Not to be outdone, Davis tallied the final 16 points of the second set, connecting for 11 aces, as South Harrison dispatched of their LKC opponent by a final of 25-11.
“Serving is about energy,” said Davis. “I try to bring a lot of energy every time I serve. It also allows me to build up our momentum.”
PC, which ended the night at 2-3, bounced back with a two-set, 25-23, 25-23, win over Notre Dame.
“That win was extremely important for our program,” Crusaderettes’ head coach Michelle Wiltse explained. “These girls are coming off of a season last year where they won only one game. It is definitely a morale booster.”
The evening ended with a straight set, 25-11, 25-13, victory by the Lady Hawks over Notre Dame, which dropped to 2-5 on the season with a tri at Clay-Battelle against the Cee Bees and Cameron tonight.
“My teammates did a great job of communicating with me about where the ball was,” said Southern, who post 8 kills during the match. “Our team works off of the energy that I can provide when I come up with a big kill.”
And those kills were as timely as they were plentiful.
Four of the Hawks first six points came via the kill by Southern and allowed the hosts to build a 19-7. Senior Abby Louk served the final five points for the match.
Game two saw South Harrison tally 10 of the first 15 points of the game enroute to a final score of 25-13.
“We want to stay undefeated,” said Southern. “If we can continue to play with the energy we showed tonight then we will have a good shot at staying unbeaten.”
