Prep football roundup: Marietta falls on late field goal

GLEN DALE — Reid Hamrick drilled a 34-yard field goal in the final seconds of Friday’s game to give John Marshall a 23-21 victory over visiting Marietta.

Dalton Cooper got the scoring started with a 75-yard touchdown run just 25 seconds into the affair.

Marietta responded at the 5:56 mark. On fourth-and-3 from the Monarchs 18-yard line, Trenton McVey faked a handoff to Kobe Alexander and found daylight on the outside, running for an 18-yard TD to knot it up at 7-all.

John Marshall had a pair of drives thwarted by interceptions as Lucas Miller and Daymeon Gulley each had picks to keep the Monarchs at bay. Gulley’s interception came at the goal line.

The Tigers had a chance to go into halftime with a leaf when they got the ball with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter. Facing a third-and-2 at their own 49, Will Tornes took a handoff 34 yards into the red zone. Marietta advanced the ball all the way down the 1, but ran out of time and went into the break still tied.

On John Marshall’s first possession of the second half, Alexander came up with the Tigers’ third INT of the game and returned it to the JMHS 3-yard line. One play later, Alexander got the handoff and powered his way into the end zone. Kingston McMahon’s kick made it 14-7 with 8:32 to go in the third.

The Monarchs, however, hit right back. Cooper picked up his second long touchdown run of the night, this time from 67 yards out, to tie it up at 14-14 at the 8:15 mark.

After getting a stop on defense, John Marshall got the ball back and went right back to Cooper. This time, he found paydirt from 10 yards out to make it 20-14 with 38 seconds left in the third.

Needing an answer, the Tigers drove deep into John Marshall territory thanks to a 24-yard run by Alexander and a facemask on the back end.

On fourth-and-15, McVey found Owen Riley on a post route for a 24-yard touchdown with 9:09 left in the game. McMahon’s kick put MHS up one.

After getting a fourth-down stop, Marietta went back to work on offense. McVey’s 23-yard scamper put the Tigers at the JMHS 22. The drive ended up stalling as Marietta turned it over on downs, but two plays later an interception by Riley gave the ball back to the orange and black.

John Marshall forced a punt and took over with 1:30 remaining at its own 35. The Monarchs found themselves in the red zone with less than a minute left. A sack by Breckin Kroft put the Monarchs in third-and-long, but JMHS got enough yardage back to send Hamrick out for the game-winning field goal try.

McVey scrambled as time ran out, but gained minimal yards before being brought down to end the game.

The Tigers (0-2) play host to Athens next week.

St. Marys 13, Ravenswood 0

ST. MARYS — St. Marys pitched a shutout as the Blue Devils claimed a season-opening 13-0 win over visiting Ravenswood Friday night.

It became 7-0 midway through the first quarter when Eli Wilson ran for a 6-yard touchdown.

Another Eli, this time Cox, gave the Blue Devils some cushion with 56 seconds left in the quarter when he found paydirt from 17 yards out.

Ravenswood did not turn the ball over, but totaled just 175 yards of offense. St. Marys only had 194 total yards and lost a fumble, but the Blue Devils were able to finish off two drives with TDs which proved to be the difference.

Jeremiah DeMoss rushed for 86 yards and threw for 53 to lead SMHS, which visits Oak Glen next week. Cox added 31 rushing yards and had a 42-yard reception.

Owen Curtis led Ravenswood with 75 passing yards and 50 rushing yards. Jakob Simmons added 47 yards on the ground. The Red Devils visit Ripley next week in the Hatchet game.

Tyler Consolidated 38, Ritchie County 14

ELLENBORO — Reese Davis and Gideon Winfrey rushed for two touchdowns apiece to help lead Tyler Consolidated past Ritchie County, 38-14, in week one action Friday.

The Silver Knights, who are 1-0 and visit Wahama next week, also got a 44-yard TD run from Brayden Neff.

The Rebels, who are 0-1 and travel to Doddridge County in week two, led briefly in the second quarter when Turner Shriver threw an 11-yard scoring strike to Hunter McCray and then ran in the two-point conversion to make it 8-6. Shriver also had a 3-yard TD run in the third to tie the game at 14-all, but TCHS scored 24 unanswered points in the fourth to seal the deal.

Winfrey carried 14 times for 84 yards, Neff added 70 yards on just three carries and Davis ran for 39 yards and threw for 60.

Shriver led Ritchie with 68 rushing yards and 99 passing yards.

Miller 20, Frontier 14

NEW MATAMORAS — Visiting Miller executed a 96-yard go-ahead drive in the fourth quarter Friday and then recovered a Frontier fumble to secure a 20-14 win.

A pair of Nick Thompson touchdowns put the Falcons (2-0) up 12-0 early.

Frontier responded just before halftime when Avery Powell hit Austyn Kephart on a 59-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds on the clock to make it 12-6 at the break.

With 1:31 left in the third, the Cougars (1-1) tied it up on Caleb Kirkpatrick’s 20-yard touchdown run, and then went ahead when Powell found Aaden Bills in the end zone on the two-point try.

Miller got the ball at its own 4-yard line late in the final period. The Falcons took it the distance, capped by Noah LeMasters’ 32-yard touchdown jaunt with 4:21 remaining, to go up six.

Frontier, which visits Clay-Battelle next Friday, drove to Miller’s 20-yard line before losing a fumble. Miller got a first down and was able to run out the clock from there.

Zander Brice got the bulk of the carries for the Falcons, going for 124 yards on 22 attempts.

Frontier saw Kirkpatrick rush 22 times for 78 yards. Powell was 14 for 18 through the air for 158 yards, with Kephart catching five passes for 103 yards.
