Beverly/Lowell ousted at Great Lakes Regional

CAROL STREAM, Ill. — Back-to-back losses at the Great Lakes Regional Tournament have put an end to another marvelous season for Beverly/Lowell Post 389/750 campaign.

After falling to Swisher (Iowa) 12-1 in six innings Thursday night at Lee Pfund Stadium, the Beverly/Lowell boys found themselves in do-or-die mode Friday against Rockport (Ind.).

Post 389/750 led 4-3 after four innings in the elimination game, but the defending three-time Hoosier State champions put together a seven-run fifth inning to take control. Rockport tallied six hits in the inning, including a pair of doubles, to chase Beverly/Lowell starter Grady Hesson. Hesson was solid up to that point, but finished with a line of 4 1/3 innings pitched, 10 hits, eight earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts to take the mound loss.

Beverly/Lowell didn’t go down without a fight. The Ohio state championships answered with two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings, with Owen McCoy and Dominic Fry each picking up RBI singles, to cut it to 10-8.

However, Rockport got two big insurance runs in the seventh. Jared Burger singled home Andersen Smith before coming around to score Declan Lewko’s triple to stretch the lead back to four, 12-8.

Beverly/Lowell went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Braden Pruitt pitched three innings of relief for Rockport, allowing six hits and four runs to earn the win. Starter Peyton Gray lasted four innings, giving up four hits, four runs, four walks and striking out three in the no-decision.

Lewko went 3 for 5 with three RBIs at the plate for Rockport while Burger was 3 for 5 with three runs scored. Smith and Max Fortwendel both tripled while Gray and Ty Brown each doubled.

Fry went 2 for 4 with a double while Carter Wheeldin and Kainan Bradford each went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Clayton Miller also drove in two while JR Curry scored twice.

Jack McCurdy singled twice for Beverly/Lowell’s only two hits off Swisher starter Drake Obemueller Thursday.

Obemueller went six innings and allowed two hits, one unearned run and two walks while fanning four to earn the victory.

Post 389/750 starter Wittekind allowed just two runs across 3 2/3 innings to take the loss. He surrendered five hits and four free passes with three punchouts.

It was a 2-1 game going into the top of the sixth when the Iowa state champs erupted for 10 runs. Michael Day, Shraden Lechtenberg, Collin McClintock and Colton Duerling all doubled in the win. Day was 3 for 4, Lechtenberg was 2 for 2 with four RBIs and McClintock was 2 for 4 with three ribbies.

Wheeldin scored the only run for Beverly/Lowell, which finished the year 29-14.
