Local golfers compete in Junior Am Championship

DAVIS — Former St. Marys High School golfer McKenzie Armstrong made par over her final four holes on the back nine during Tuesday’s first round of the Junior Am Championship at Canaan Valley Resort and closed with a final round total of 9-over par 81 – putting her in third place in the girls championship division.

Lexi Green from Charleston emerged as the first-round leader with a 79, while Chastyn Viars from South Charleston sits in second place at 80. Williamstown’s Madilyn Buttrey finished at 91.

A second local golfer is among the leaders in his age group. In the boys 13-14 division, Jude Walker from Elizabeth turned in a 3-over 75 and sits one stroke behind first-round leader Ayden Pavlik from Beckley, who shot a 74. Walker, who eagled the par 4, seventh hole, recorded six straight pars to close out his back nine.

In the boys championship division, Charles Town’s Tommy Evans recorded nine birdies – including three straight to open the front nine while shooting 8-under 64. In second place four strokes back at 68 is Huntington’s Jack Michael.

Cameron Fallon from Parkersburg South High School joins four other golfers in a tie for ninth place at 1-over 73.

Local golfers also competing in the boys championship division include Glenville’s Austin Stewart (78), Ravenswood’/s Kelan Lucas (78), Parker Vannoy (80) from Mineral Wells, St. Marys’ Tripp Morrison (81) and Glenville’s Troy Woodford (83).

Two rounds remain for both the boys and girls championship divisions, while the age divisions will wrap up on Wednesday.
