Waterford on short end of pitcher’s duel
CHILLICOTHE — For the second straight day, Waterford got an outstanding pitching performance.
Unfortunately for Zavier Heiss and the Wildcats, Southeastern’s Joey Pifer was just a little bit better.
A day after Colten Jones tossed a complete-game shutout, Heiss also went the distance, allowing two runs with three walks and four strikeouts.
On the other side, Pifer allowed just one run on two hits over seven innings with one walk and seven punchouts to lead the Panthers to a 2-1 victory in Sunday’s Division VI district final at VA Memorial Stadium.
Southeastern will play Reedsville Eastern in the regional semifinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Beavers Field.
Down two in the bottom of the seventh, Heiss hit a deep flyball to left that was dropped. He advanced to second on the play and later scored on Braun Doak’s RBI single to left to get the Wildcats within one. However, Pifer got a groundout and a strikeout to end the game.
The Wildcats finished with a 16-11 record.
Cole Mullenix drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Hayden Jones singled to right field. Mullenix went first to third on the play, but tried to score when the throw to third got away. However, Southeastern third baseman CJ Huff got to the ball quickly and fired a strike home to get Mullenix.
Pifer helped himself by leading off the top of the fourth with a double down the right field line.
Pifer scored one pitch later on Carson McWhorter’s single to center to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Heiss escaped further damage by getting Huff to pop out and Landon Brown to hit into a 1-6-3 inning-ending double play.
The Panthers added another in the fifth. Cheadle poked a one-out double to right. Three-hole hitter Coleton Baxter grounded out to short, but Cheadle advanced to third on the play. That advancement loomed large as, with cleanup man Brayden Burns in the box, Cheadle raced home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Burns ended up walking, but Heiss fanned Drew Leach to end the inning.
Waterford got a leadoff runner on in the bottom of the fifth when Brooker grounded to short and reached on an error, but Pifer ended up escaping trouble thanks to an inning-ending strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play.
