ST. MARYS — Fort Frye head coach Eric Huck will lead the Ohio all-stars into the 30th edition of the Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis All-Star Classic Friday at St. Marys’ Bill Hanlin Stadium.

Huck is bringing his ultra-successful wing-T offense to the game and will have plenty of skilled personnel at his disposal.

“It’s got to be very basic, only having a few days to prepare,” said Huck, who guided the Cadets to nine wins and the Division VI regional semifinals in the fall. “So far they’ve picked it up pretty well and we may throw in a wrinkle or two as we go.”

Huck gets to coach three of his players one last time as Braxton Ross, Treven Nicholson and Maddox Huck all are on the Ohio squad.

Ross (first team), Nicholson (second team) and Maddox Huck (third team) all were named All-Ohio following the 2024 campaign and will pack quite a punch for the Buckeye State.

“That’s special to coach those guys one more time,” coach Huck said.

“All three had a really good four years at Fort Frye. They have one more game and it’s definitely going to be fun.”

The main goal of this game is to generate funds into research for finding a cure for cystic fibrosis.

“Our players have done a great job of helping with that,” Huck said. “They’re raising money. There’s a lot of work going into it, and it’s definitely worth it. Anything we can do. Hopefully we get a good turnout. I think we’re going to have a good product on the field. We’re going to have some of our area’s best players. Hopefully people come out and support the BACF.”

Assisting Huck will be his coaching staff at Fort Frye, which includes Chad Ross, Josh Seagraves, Brenden Huck and Jason Schob.

Huck actually assisted Schob, then Marietta’s head coach, in the 2022 BACF game, a 27-6 win for the Buckeye State.

Ohio won last year’s game by a score of 9-7, but the Mountain State holds the all-time advantage, 16-13.

“West Virginia always puts together a team every year,” Huck said. “We’re there to win. That competitive spirit is there.”

Thirteen schools will be represented on the Ohio team, including the three Fort Frye players.

Barnesville will have the most with five, while Marietta, Buckeye Trail and River all will have four players in the game.

Shamrock gunslinger Casey Carpenter, a two-time first team All-Ohioan, and Frontier signal-caller True King are the quarterbacks for Ohio.

“The nice thing with our quarterbacks is not only can they throw it, they are also that dual threat where they can run it as well,” Huck said. “They have done a nice job picking up the offense. It’s a little different with that motion and wing-T look.”

Huck will have several talented options out of the backfield, including Marietta’s Seth Britton, Belpre’s Landon Vanfosson, Morgan’s William Dodd, River’s Lucas Dennis and Trail’s Blake Wayble.

Waterford’s Max Roberts, Meigs’ Dustin Vance, Eastern’s Gavin Murphy and Southern’s Zach Thomas are among the options for Carpenter and King to throw to.

Up front, Ross and Trail’s Colt Porter are the centers, Trail’s Wyatt Conner, Waterford’s Logan Jackson, Meigs’ Zach Goble and Marietta’s Aiden Wilkinson are some of the guards and Nicholson, Barnesville’s Braden Butler River’s Derek Smith and Monroe Central’s Andrew Pickenpaugh are among the tackles.

“We feel like we’ve definitely got some good linemen,” Huck said. “For an all-star game, we do have a little bit of depth.”

With 34 total kids on the roster, guys are likely going to have to play both ways.

“Everybody’s going to get breaks, but we are going to be two-platooning a little,” Huck said. “We thought maybe we’d have enough to do offense and defense, but some guys are going to have to go both ways.”

Barnesville’s Evan Lough will handle the kicking and punting duties.

Some other players to keep an eye on are Carson Chavez and Isaac Klintworth of Marietta, Jeffrey Triplett of Frontier, Si Ware of Waterford, Tyler Whitacre of Monroe Central, Parker Bennett and Peyton Blue of River, Bradey McIntire and Blake Kirk of Barnesville, Gryphon Thomas of Southern and Jackson Hess of Buckeye Trail.

“I feel like a big part of it is eliminating big plays on defense and taking care of the football on offense,” Huck said. “A lot of times in a game like this, the team that gets that momentum with a sudden turnover or big play makes all the difference. Special teams are always important. Something going right or wrong on special teams can be a huge play that swings the game.”
