Gilmer routs Notre Dame in state quarterfinal
CHARLESTON — Gilmer County put on a defensive clinic against Notre Dame in Thursday’s Class A state quarterfinal matchup at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
The top-seeded Titans held the Fighting Irish to 23.5% (8 for 34) from the floor and forced 37 turnovers en route to a 67-26 triumph. Gilmer (21-4) will take on either Cameron or Pendleton County at 5:30 p.m. today in the semis.
GCHS, which improved to 21-4, led 17-3 after one, 38-9 at halftime and 59-17 after three.
Lena Frymier scored a game-high 17 points to go along with four steals for the Titans. Allie Ellyson added 15 points plus game-highs of eight steals and six assists. Blair Dobbins finished with 13 points and six rebounds while Ava Dobbins contributed 12 points, a game-high eight boards and two blocks. Kenley Hartshorn grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots, Malory Castell chipped in six boards and six steals and Laura Brannon tallied five dimes and four steals.
Notre Dame (12-7) got 13 points and three blocks from Selena Wilson. Isabella Garnek led the squad with seven rebounds while Piper Fryer registers three assists.
