Spring Valley girls too much for PHS, 57-39

PARKERSBURG – In a Mountain State Athletic Conference clash of ranked Class AAAA programs here Wednesday night inside Memorial Fieldhouse, No. 5 Parkersburg held No. 1 Spring Valley to 28% shooting, but the Big Reds converted at just 19% in a 57-39 loss.
Spring Valley point guard Sophi Hutchison flirted with a triple-double after scoring 13 points, pulling down nine rebounds and dishing out a game-high eight assists.
The 18-2 Timberwolves of head man Larry Miller won their 12th straight contest and were aided by Allie Daniels' 10-point, 10-rebound double-double along with getting 17 points from Brooklyn Ellis, 10 by Dria Parker as well as seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench from Emma Edwards.
PHS head coach Chris Murray's program, which closed the regular season at 16-6 and didn't have the services of junior pivot Kennedy Porter who came in averaging a double-double, were led by Frances Guice's 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
The Big Reds, who open regional play on Friday when Huntington invades, used an 11-3 run in the opening quarter to forge a 15-8 cushion. Guice had six points in the spurt, Lauren Flanagan scored two of her seven counters with a banked in floater and Audriana Medina drained a 3 via a Sophie Lott dime for the seven-point edge with 2:49 left in the first.
However, the Timberwolves ended the stanza with a trio of triples all via Hutchison assists. Ellis had two of her five and Parker hit the first of her pair to give the visitors a 17-15 lead after one.
It looked like SVHS might run away from the Big Reds after getting a Hutchison trey and a pair of putbacks by Edwards for a 24-15 advantage early in the second.
Parkersburg, though, battled back and closed it to within five at 27-22 thanks to field goals from Guice and Chloe Gribble as well as a three-point play by Medina.
PHS, which missed all 10 of its trey attempts in the second as the hosts finished 2 of 21 from distance and shot 19.4% (14 of 62), were behind 29-22 at intermission.
Following a Flangan trifecta and deuce the Big Reds closed it to 29-27 at 6:37 of the third, but the hosts missed their final nine field goal attempts and trailed 45-31 entering the fourth.
Despite another three-point play by Guice, who was joined by Eden DeBord with eight caroms, to open the third which cut the deficit to 11, the red and white missed 16 of their final 17 field goal attempts.
Ellis added five assists and Edwards two blocks as SVHS, which plays at home Tuesday versus Friday's Parkersburg South and Cabell Midland victor, went 10 of 32 from downtown and shot 28% (21 of 75).
DeBord had a game-high three blocks.
