Roundup: PHS girls victorious; South girls fall

PARKERSBURG – NuNu Pannell led all scorers with 30 points here Wednesday night inside Memorial Fieldhouse, but it wasn’t nearly enough as No. 6, Class AAAA Parkersburg’s blitzed the Cougars, 81-52, in a Mountain State Athletic Conference affair.

The 11-3 Big Reds of head coach Chris Murray, who had double figure scoring efforts from Audriana Medina (16), Kennedy Porter (14) and Sophie Lott (11) led 20-7 after one and 43-15 at the break.

PHS, which also got seven points from Ellie Kinnison along with five counters apiece from starters Lauren Flanagan and Frances Guice, hits the road for another MSAC showdown on Friday at No. 10 George Washington.

The 6-9 Cougars, who received six points from Kamari Johnson, play Friday at Riverside

Huntington 49, Parkersburg South 42

HUNTINGTON — LaLa Sloan went off for a game-high 30 points here Wednesday night as Huntington rallied past Parkersburg South, 49-42.

The 3-12 Patriots, who committed just 10 turnovers, were unable to find their shooting touch as head coach Ed Davis’ squad shot just 28% (16 of 58).

PSHS, which plays Monday evening at John Marshall in an OVAC consolation affair, received double figure scoring efforts from Farrah Yost (14) and Lucie Cline, who scored 13 points and joined Emilee Owens with a team-high six rebounds.

The host Highlanders (2-9) trailed 25-20 at the break and 33-29 entering the final eight minutes, but outscored the Patriots 20-9 en route to victory.

Cline added a pair of blocked shots for the Patriots, who received seven points and a team-high four assists from Tae Richards as well as a team-high three steals from Owens.

Samya Cunningham and Liz Bohren chipped in six markers apiece for the victors.

St. Marys 77, Calhoun County 39

ST. MARYS — Calhoun County, which was limited to seven points in each of the first two quarters here Wednesday night, trailed 44-14 at intermission as No. 2, Class AA St. Marys rolled to a 77-39 victory.

The Blue Devils of head coach Fred King, who improved to 13-1 and play Friday night at No. 3 Williamstown with an eye on a regular season sweep, were led by Addie Davis’ 18 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Brynnley Bulluck, who swatted a quartet of shots, added 16 points, six caroms and four dimes. Callie Powell finished with 15 points, a game-high six assists and joined teammates Linsie Asher, who scored a dozen, with a trio of steals.

St. Marys, which had just five turnovers, saw Anna Bennett grab nine boards to go along with seven counters.

The Red Devils received double figure scoring efforts from Ashlyn Boak (14) and Paige Sterns (11) while Brealle Arthur chipped in eight markers.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Gilmer 71, Roane 61

GLENVILLE – Kolten Holbert drained four 3s and pumped in 20 of his career-high 36 points in a pivotal third quarter here Wednesday night as Gilmer County handed visiting Roane County a 71-61 Little Kanawha Conference setback.

The Raiders of first-year head coach Brayden Miller, who slipped to 3-8 and play Friday at No. 6, Class AA Ravenswood, only trailed 30-25 at halftime.

Aside from Holbert’s big night, the Titans of second-year head man Austin Ratliff also received nine points apiece from Zach Wine, Brody Beall and Tyler Ratliff while Remi Huffman chipped in six markers.

Will Odle paced the scoring attack for the Raiders with 20 while Cam Cumpston had 15 points and Shay Harper tossed in 12.

The 3-11 Titans will attempt to start their first winning streak of the campaign when Wirt County invades tonight.

Frontier 43, River 29

NEW MATAMORAS — Frontier picked up its second win in as many nights Wednesday when the Cougars dispatched visiting River 43-29.

Head coach Roger Kirkpatrick’s FHS squad (8-5) outscored the Pilots (7-8) 14-8 in the first quarter and extended the lead to nine, 25-16, by halftime.

Both teams went into a scoring slump in the third, with each side scoring just three points, before the Cougars out-pointed RHS 15-10 over the final eight minutes to pull away.

Avery Powell scored a game-high 18 points for the Cougars, who have a rematch with the Pilots Friday in Hannibal. True King added seven points for the winning team.

Evan Longwell led River with 12 points.

John Marshall 66, Magnolia 53

NEW MARTINSVILLE — Three players scored in double figures for head Dave Tallman’s Magnolia squad, but it wasn’t enough as the Blue Eagles fell to visiting John Marshall 66-53 Wednesday.

Dubale Greathouse led MHS with 18 points, Kingsten Christen added 17 and Hunter Oates chipped in 14.

The Monarchs were paced by Jackson Helms’ 19 points while Bryant Haught and Landon Snyder tallied 10 apiece.
