Roundup: South falls to Princeton in 48-47 shootout
PRINCETON — Chance Barker threw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, including a 29-yarder to Daniel Jannings as time expired, to lift Princeton to a 48-47 win over Parkersburg South Friday.
South (5-5) saw Eli Bartley carry 35 times for 237 yards and six touchdowns, including three straight in the third quarter to put the Patriots up 47-28.
Barker, who finished 24 for 40 for 346 yards and five TDs, found Jennings from 20 yards out at 9:41, Wyatt Cline from 54 yards out at 4:31 and then Jennings again at the end of regulation. Jayce Gum booted the extra point through the uprights to secure the victory.
South had trouble with extra points — two kick attempts were blocked, another was missed and a pair of two-point tries were denied.
South trailed 21-6 in the second quarter before Cole Middleton’s 25-yard scoop and score gave the Patriots some momentum. Bartley found the end zone twice in the second period to put PSHS up 27-21, but Jake Belcher’s 9-yard TD catch put Princeton up 28-27 at halftime.
Collin Hayes was 7 for 18 passing for 152 yards and two interceptions. Bartley was his top target with three catches for 66 yards.
Princeton fumbled three times and lost all of them.
Magnolia 14, Clay-Battelle 12
NEW MARTINSVILLE – Clay-Battelle scored the first two touchdowns of the game here Friday at Alumni Field, but Magnolia head coach Craig Mason’s Blue Eagles rallied for a wild 14-12 victory on senior night, which might advance them to the Class A postseason.
Magnolia (4-6) didn’t get on the scoreboard until the Blue Eagles converted a trick play with 1:38 left in the third.
Facing a fourth-and-3 from the 19, coach Mason called a halfback pass, which ended up resulting in a touchdown when Carson Wade pulled it in from Finn Loy. The Blue Eagles only trailed by six after Kingsten Christen, who hit 8 of 16 for 88 yards, hooked up with Brody Vargo on the two-point conversion pass.
The Blue Eagles put together a methodical 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive that consisted of one incomplete pass and 11 carries by Landon Streets, who bulled in from the 2 for the game-winner with 6:37 remaining.
However, Clay-Battelle (5-5) managed to march the ball into the red zone and with not quite a minute remaining faced a third-and-goal at the 5. That’s when Magnolia’s Anthony Lancaster registered a 12-yard sack and the pass on fourth down fell incomplete.
Streets, who had a forced fumble, rushed 20 times for 112 yards and added 42 stripes on a pair of receptions. Loy (4-40) led the Blue Eagles in receiving.
Vargo also had an interception for the victors.
Doddridge County 21, Tyler Consolidated 20
WEST UNION – Tyler Consolidated gave Doddridge County all it could handle before falling to the Bulldogs 21-20 on the final night of the regular season.
Tyler Consolidated’s missed two-point conversion near the four-minute mark of the fourth quarter enabled DCHS to hold and improve to 8-2. The Silver Knights slipped to 6-4.
This see-saw affair opened with Brysen Dixon hooking up with Jerod Trent for a 45-yard touchdown reception to put the Bulldogs in front 8-0 with 16 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
TCHS had a quick answer not even a minute into the second quarter when Bo Tallman scored on a 59-yard TD pass from Brady Strode. Strode threw a second TD late in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 206 yards through the air.
Another quick-hitter, this time by DCHS on a Landon Thomas 3-yard TD catch gave the Bulldogs a 15-6 lead at halftime.
Branson Winfrey, who led TCHS with 101 yards rushing, scored from 17 yards midway in the third quarter. DCHS answered yet again, this time two minutes into the fourth quarter on Brycen Eidel’s 53-yard TD scamper. Eidel led all ballcarriers with 127 yards with just eight carries.
Trailing 21-14, TCHS hit paydirt at the 3:58 mark as Strode connected with Tallman from 5 yards. The two-point try failed.
St. Marys 40, Ravenswood 7
ST. MARYS – St. Marys closed out the season with the type of success it enjoyed throughout the latter part of the season after dispatching Ravenswood 40-7 in the final game of the season for both schools on Friday night.
The Blue Devils, who won three of their last four games, ended the campaign at 4-6. They punished Ravenswood with the ground game after finishing with 409 yards rushing.
Aside from Logan Eddy’s 202 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns, St. Marys shared the wealth. Quarterback Ryan Kent rushed for 88 yards on five attempts, Eli Cox had one carry for a 35-yard TD run and Jeremiah DeMoss contributed 28 yards on eight attempts.
St. Marys scored all 40 points prior to halftime. Ravenswood prevented the shutout when Austin Vannest scxored on a 20-yard run at the 10:28 mark of the fourth quarter.
Roane County 43, Ripley 7
SPENCER – Roane County left little doubt in a matchup of two teams with impressive records.
The 10-0 Raiders, who entered the game ranked No. 2 in Class AA, did all of their scoring in the first and defeated the Vikings 43-7.
Roane County stuck to the ground game, finishing with 424 yards. Shay Harper accounted for one touchdown and led Roane County with 176 yards on just nine carries. Backfield mate Lane Watson finished with 134 yards on 134 attempts and accounted for four touchdowns.
Ripley (7-3) managed just six first downs, but did spoil the Raiders’ shutout bid when Noah Casto scored from four yards in the fourth quarter.
Ritchie County 54, Calhoun County 0
MT. ZION – Ritchie County limited Calhoun County to one first down and 15 yards of total offense while making quick work of the Red Devils in a 54-0 win on Friday night.
Ritchie County closed out the season at 4-6 thanks to the ground game, which generated 353 yards. Rebel quarterback Turner Shriver finished with 187 yards rushing and three touchdowns as he led his team to a 34-0 lead by intermission. Teammate Carter Satterfield added 66 yards on just four carries.
Clay County 37, Braxton County 15
SUTTON – Noah Collins threw for 267 yards and four touchdowns as Clay County defeated Braxton County, 37-15, on Friday night.
Braxton County fell behind 37-0 by halftime but answered with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns. Landon Mays hooked up with Logan Payne for a 17-yard TD completion. Several minutes later, Braydon Fleming ran it in from 3 yards.
Steven Deal led Braxton County with 84 yards on 15 carries.
