PARKERSBURG -- An injury-plagued Parkersburg South team had to scratch and claw to keep its season alive Tuesday at Erickson All-Sports Facility.
The Patriots scored two goals in the second half to erase a 1-0 deficit and defeat visiting Winfield 2-1 in the first round of sectional play.
"It was a gutsy effort by the girls," said South head coach Ron Buchholtz. "We're just decimated with injuries right now."
Sydne Alexander's goal in the 53rd minute put WHS up 1-0.
South responded 13 minutes later with the equalizer as Livy Henderson scored off Kallie McCutcheon's assist.
Five minutes later in the 68th minute, McCutcheon passed to Regan Shockey, who buried the go-ahead goal to put South up 2-1.
Emilee Owens saved three of Winfield’s four shots on goal. The Patriots put seven shots on target, with Winfield keeper Gabby Canterbury stopping five of them.
"To come back and win and to see these girls' grit and determination, it was pretty phenomenal," Buchholtz said.
South will face Hurricane, which eliminated Parkersburg Tuesday, in the sectional final at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the EASF.
