PARKERSBURG — Hobbled Parkersburg South found a way here Thursday night inside Erickson All-Sports Facility during the Class AAA, Region IV, Section 2 championship match versus Hurricane as Patriot senior Addy White tallied the only goal for a 1-0 victory.

The Patriots, who received shutout No. 8 from junior keeper Emilee Owens, got what proved to be the match winner with 20 seconds left in the 49th minute from the right foot of White.

Following a Hurricane foul, the senior placed the ball at the 29 in front of her own bench and sent a perfect high-arcing shot toward the goal that eluded the leaping save effort of Redskin keeper Emma Jeffrey.

“I think we were ready for any team and we just had to come mentally prepared, positive energy and everyone giving it their all,” said White, who scored her second goal of the season. “We did that even though we have a few injured people. We had people step up.

“We all gave it our all and best effort and we won. I’ve practiced it before and shot it from that far away, so it’s just kind of another free kick and luckily it went in. It’s been amazing. These are like my best friends and I wouldn’t want to be doing it with anyone else. It’s just great. A great environment and the energy is good.”

The third-seeded Redskins of head coach Reuben Ellis, who upset No. 2 Parkersburg in the sectional semifinal, closed the campaign with a 9-8-3 mark.

“We put them under pressure,” admitted coach Ellis, whose team had two shots on goal in the first half by leading scorer Kendall Anderson (24 goals) as well as one apiece from Kendall Pyle and Avery French. “I thought we played a great game. We knew it was going to be a dogfight, difficult conditions, but that’s the breaks.

“Usually one play can make or break you and it broke us tonight. You’re gutted for them because they played their hearts out. They left a good legacy and the younger underclassmen, they know what it is to be a senior and be a good leader because these seniors definitely were.”

The hosts were without second leading scorer Jozy Barton (10 goals), while leading scorer Adi Altizer (23 goals) was one of several walking wounded.

“Adi is hobbling around out there giving it her all and playing her heart out,” admitted PSHS boss Ron Bucholtz, whose program claimed their 10th consecutive sectional crown. “Camryn (McClain) has a banged up knee. Anniya (Powell) is on a bad hamstring.

“Regan (Shockey) is on a bad ankle. This list just goes on. Jozy is out with an ankle injury. The character of these girls is just amazing. We knew it was going to take something. We almost pulled off the other free kick. White’s free kick was just amazing.”

The Patriots didn’t have a shot on goal in the first half and aside from White’s tally the only other shots on goal came via Shockey in the 45th and 66th minutes, respectively.

“Heckuva a game. We came as a team,” Shockey said. “We came out strong and we stuck together on defense.

“We didn’t have our key players, but I mean we played for them. It (the win) means everything. We haven’t lost on this field in three years. We only had one loss on this field.”

Owens had a pair of saves following the scoreless first half and was tested in the 48th minute by a Kennedy Price free kick, but the Patriot made the one-hop save.

White soon followed with the goal and Hurricane managed just two other shots on frame.

The first came in the 66th minute from Pyle and the last one came in the 72nd minute.

French, who had the only corner kick, sent one into the box and it was headed by Peyton Scott, who soon thereafter had a good look at the goal and fired away, but Patriot defender Caiden Watson was there to block it.

Farrah Yost was tasked with sticking to Anderson the entire match.

“We knew going into the season if we were healthy we would have a really, really good chance of getting all the way to the state tournament and maybe coming away with the title,” added coach Bucholtz. “We’ve just been decimated with injuries here lately. You know, we got several girls battling injuries. A couple more significant injuries that came up the other day against Winfield and they had us on the ropes for a while, but these girls have such heart and determination. To come from behind against Winfield when we’re down 1-0 with everybody hobbled, and that was with 20 minutes left, to find the goals there.

“These girls are a family. They are close friends and we knew that they were going to fight for each other like there was no tomorrow, and that’s what it was going to take, a total team effort. Hurricane had everybody available and we’re just so banged up with injuries. We knew offensively we were probably not going to get many chances. Their top player, Kendall Anderson, outstanding player. We knew we needed to shut her down and we did an outstanding job. Farrah did a magnificent job marking her and then with help from her teammates.”
