BEVERLY — The beat went on here Tuesday evening for visiting Warren and head coach Ann Skufca as the Warriors survived 16 service errors en route to sweeping Fort Frye 26-24, 25-13 and 25-21 during a Twin State League showdown.

Former Cadet Madyson Long, who is now a senior at WHS, put down a match-high 20 kills while adding an ace and one assist.

“We definitely started off knowing that this was going to be a rival game so everybody is having their emotions run high,” admitted Skufca, whose squad improved to 10-0 overall, 2-0 in the TSL and returns to action at 11 a.m. Saturday with a triangular at Wheeling Park that includes Marietta.

“We set a gameplan and tried to execute that gameplan to the best of our ability and I give Fort Frye credit for giving us a challenge. It’s always nice to win one on the road.”

The Cadets of head coach Amanda Duskey, now 5-4 and 0-2 in league play, had three of their seven service errors in the opening set.

Following downed spikes in the first set from Elayna Greenwalt and Bailey Saliba, the Warriors opened up an 11-6 cushion.

A Carmen Henniger kill stymied the run for the hosts, but the Warriors were doubled up at 14-7 after Long had two kills sandwiched between another Saliba downed spike.

Fort Frye continued to fight and thanks in part to two kills from Jackie Tornes, one by Jaden Cox as well as a Henniger ace, the set was finally even at 15.

There were then ties at 16, 17, 19, 21 and finally 24-all after Henniger registered a kill via one of Aubrie Lang’s seven assists. However, FFHS then had an attack error and couldn’t return Salba’s serve.

Warren scored the first four points of set two and it was 7-3 following a Sarah Pettey kill and a Long ace.

The Cadets were within three at 11-8 following Cox’s block on Greenwalt and again at 12-9 after Elle Casto had a kill via a Camryn Huck assist, but couldn’t get any closer.

Following Paige Morgenstern’s kill thanks to libero Emmie Duskey’s bump set the Cadets cut it to 14-10, but Long and Sydney Starcher, who had eight kills, took over at the net.

The final set didn’t see a lead by either team of more than a single point until the Warriors went ahead 11-9 following consecutive Starcher kills, which came from setter Payge Cornell’s match-high 35 assists.

Huck’s second hit dump kill put Fort Frye ahead 15-14 and the Cadets later erased a 19-18 deficit after Kali Shilling’s kill put the hosts ahead 20-19.

However, Greenwalt served for the final four points as Long added three more kills to finish off the night.

“We just need to work on consistency,” admitted coach Duskey, whose squad welcomes in Point Pleasant on Thursday for another TSL match. “We haven’t found the right consistency yet to just flow, so we’re still working on that. We had good effort.

“I mean it was there, especially with someone getting hit in the nose (Huck) and another one twisting an ankle (Ella Dowler), so when you have to go on the fly, I mean they stepped it up and played through it. I’m proud of them for that.”

Pettey chipped in six kills, one ace and one assist, while Greenwalt had a trio of downed spikes.

“Sometimes you never know what’s going to happen and obviously we try to improve every single day, but I give our players a lot of credit when they were down,” added coach Skufca.

“We came right back and this win goes for these girls and how much they love this team and how hard they work every single day.”
