EMORY, Virginia – Emory & Henry capped its 38-7 victory here Saturday afternoon at Fred Selfe Stadium against Glenville State with a 54-yard touchdown pass from Charles Mutter III to Cam Peoples as time expired.
The Wasps (1-0) of interim head coach Quintin Hunter led 17-0 after the opening quarter and scored the first 31 points of the affair.
Glenville State head coach Mike Kellar’s program held a 16-14 advantage in first downs, but couldn’t overcome four interceptions and a lost fumble.
The G-men, who will try to get to 1-1 when Lock Haven invades Morris Stadium at 1 p.m. next Saturday, managed just 74 ground yards on 23 rushes with Mark Rucker (8-42) leading the way.
Jordan Jackson’s 8-yard scoring scamper and Trace Butcher’s extra point put the Wasps ahead for good at 8:10 of the first.
Butcher’s 37-yard field goal and Mutter’s 2-yard TD burst put the visitors in a 17-0 hole, which also was the halftime score.
Anthony Garrett, who hit 15 of 33 passes for 174 yards, was intercepted at the line of scrimmage by a leaping Ean Rhea, who housed it from 35 yards.
Mutter’s 19-yard scoring strike to Peoples and another Butcher PAT gave the Wasps a commanding 31-0 lead not quite midway through the third.
GSU finally answered late in the third when Garrett found Elijah Palmer for a 10-yard touchdown connection. Brody Layman’s extra point cut the deficit to 24.
The G-men proceeded to attempt an onside kick by Layman, which was successful and also held up under an Emory & Henry red flag challenge. However, the G-men were unable to score.
Zay Wood (2-40), Tariq Miller (2-36), Naseem Pacheco (3-34), Arvan Thornhill (1-23) and Dylan Day (3-19) led the GSU receivers.
Jackson finished with game-highs of 17 rushes and 89 yards. Mutter hit 7 of 17 for 141 yards and was intercepted by Mark Shepherd. Peoples (3-83) was his top target.
Aside from Rhea’s pick-6, the Wasps also received interceptions from Jacob Robinson, Jarrell Harrison and Addison Knicely.
Glenville State had four sacks in the affair thanks to Jamair Diaz (2.5), Hayden Moore (1) and Marion Lawson (.5). Moore, who had 2.5 tackles for loss, had a team-high six tackles. Diaz and Brogan Brown were credited with five stops apiece.
