MASON — Parkersburg South’s Parker Vannoy shot respective 35s on the front and back nine here Friday to finish at even par and top the field at the Callaway Junior Tour High School Series held at Riverside Golf Club.
The Patriots of head coach John Badgley finished with a 235 team score, which tied them for third with Winfield, but behind champion Cabell Midland’s 214 and runner-up Hurricane’s 223.
Brandt Butcher delivered a round of 81 and Nate Gilpin chipped in with an 84 to account for the PSHS scoring trio.
“I thought the guys played well,” said Badgley, who was unable to use Cameron Fallon’s 3-over effort after being disqualified. “Parker was medalist and shot even par. You know, he led the team which we are real pleased with and the conditions were not optimal. We had a little bit of wind and some rain showers, but played through it.
“We ended up counting Brandt Butcher’s score and Nate Gilpin’s. We were pleased to see Brandt improve each day as the week went along and he finished well. Cam was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. This popped up and got us last year with Parker up at a tournament in Wheeling and now Cam had that today.”
Joining Vannoy on the all-tournament team were Cabell Midland’s Wyatt Maynard and Cooper Childress, who tied for second with 71s, while Knight Carson Sergent (72) was fourth and Hurricane’s Parker O’Dell (73) fifth.
“We sat down and talked about it as a team and hopefully we can use this as a learning experience because if it’s going to happen, I’m glad it happened on August the 9th then on September 28th on the Tuesday at regionals,” added coach Badgley. “You don’t want it to ever happen. It’s just one of those things. Kind of got in a hurry at the end of the match. His playing partner had him for a different score than he had.
“Cam had it on his card as a 74, but his playing partner had it as a 73, so that’s a tough lesson. We still finished third. I tried to tell the guys again, look at the teams that are finishing one and two and today look at the teams that placed one, two and tied for third. All of those teams are in our region. We can play with them, but we’re going to have to beat them at some point.
“We’re not at the point where we can put three very good competitive scores together on the same day. We need to get to that point and I think we will. Early in the week Nate Gilpin had three really nice days and put together three good scores. Today, Nate was off a little bit and Brandt had a couple off days during the week and he put it together and had a decent day today. We just have to get three very good scores in one day. We just haven’t got there yet.”
Wahama’s Grant Roush finished tied for 10th with a 76, while Ravenswood’s Kelan Lucas (13th, 77) and St. Marys’ Trent Renner (T19th, 78) were the only other Mid-Ohio Valley golfers to crack the top 20.
The Blue Devils, who had a 91 from Kenzie Armstrong, finished ninth place with Renner’s 79 being joined by Preston Lawhon’s 82 and Tripp Morrison’s 84.
Wahama, which finished tied for 11th, also had scoring rounds from Brady Meadows (82) and Jesse Jordan Jr. (91).
Vinnie Guice’s 82 led Parkersburg, which finished tied for 14th and received a 92 from Reed Vickers. Margaret Mildren’s 85 and Jack Louden’s 86 put the red and white in a tie with John Marshall at 253.
Led by Cody Nichols’ 82, Lucas Hall’s 83 and Daren Raines’ 92, the Raiders from Roane County finished 17th with a 257 and two spots ahead of Williamstown’s 264. Toby Thompson paced the ‘Jackets with an 86. He was followed by Hunter Haddox (88), Madilyn Buttrey (90) and Wyatt Siley (95).
Lucas’ teammate Marshall Creel carded an 81 as the Red Devils’ 268 total also counted Marcus Williams’ 110.
The B-team for Parkersburg High had top efforts from Logan Fling (95) and Josh Knicely (100).
