WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – Parkersburg South golfer Cameron Fallon found himself in familiar territory during the final stop of the Callaway Junior Tour – the Tour Championship – Thursday afternoon at the Greenbrier Sporting Club.
Fallon, who enters his junior season at South in the fall, secured his third win of the year in the 15-16 age division after shooting a 1-over par 72, which also earned him the Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal Low Round of the Day for the entire boys field. It was his third low round effort of the summer.
“That was my fourth time,” Fallon said of playing on Snead. “I played two practice rounds and I played last year in the event and then today.”
Fallon shot 1-over on the front and was at 4-over entering the par-3, 15th.
However, after carding a par he proceeded to close out his round with a trio of birdies.
“I definitely thought I was out of contention, for sure,” admitted Fallon, who also sealed the Callaway Junior Tour 15-16 Player of the Year hardware. “I was on the 16 tee and it’s a downhill par-5. I hit it into the high grass. I hit it out to about 20 feet and missed eagle and tapped in for birdie.
“I was a little nervous for the second shot on the par 5. I hit a good drive and I was checking the leaderboard going down 17 fairway, and I knew I had to make the putt and get up and down.
“On 18, I hit a bomb of a drive in front of everybody and hit it on the green and spun it back off, and I made the putt from the front fringe. Everybody was watching. It felt pretty cool.”
A total of 31 golfers competed, including Cole Darnold of St. Marys placing fifth in the 17-18 age division after shooting an 81. Fairmont’s Caleb Young took medalist honors with a 74.
Jude Walker of Elizabeth finished runner-up in the 12-under category with a 78 – six strokes back of medalist Bentley Shirkey from Barboursville. Shirkey held off Walker for the 12U season crown.
Andrew James from Huntington won the 13-14 age category after carding a 74.
On the girls side, Oceana’s Kerri-Anne Cook claimed her 10th low round title in the 15-18 age group after finishing with a 77. Williamstown’s Madilyn Buttrey, who was third in the overall season race, took fourth with a 90.
Buckhannon’s Makenzie Egress placed first in the 10-14 age division with a score of 92.
Fallon, who returns to action on Wednesday at the 91st West Virginia Open being contested at Edgewood Country Club in Sissonville, was nearly joined by teammate Parker Vannoy.
Vannoy, who finished third in the Callaway Junior Tour 17-18 POY race, was a stroke off the pace on Wednesday during the W.Va. Open Last Chance Qualifier at Bel Meadows Golf Club.
The Patriot finished in a six-way tie for seventh after shooting a 3-over par 75.
Williamstown’s Jared Bryant and Parkersburg South graduate Ben Kunselman advanced as two of the six qualifiers after shooting respective 74s.
