WHEELING - Moundsville was in the giving mood early in Monday night's West Virginia Area 1 American Legion baseball tournament, and Parkersburg was more than willing to accept.
Post 3 committed a trio of costly errors and walked two batters and Post 15 took advantage in posting a 7-2 victory on Patriot Field at Wheeling Park High School.
"Offensively we kept pressure on them all night, but give Moundsville credit, they hung in there," Parkersburg manager Mike Goodwin said. "We were able to steal a couple of bases and get runners in scoring position. That was the difference in the game."
Moundsville, the designated visitor as the No. 4 seed, actually led 1-0 when Cain Martin scored on an error after being hit-by-a-pitch in the top of the first.
Top-seeded Parkersburg (22-11) responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back in building a 5-1 lead after two and 7-2 at the end of three.
Evan Swain belted a two-run single to highlight the three-run first. The third tally came across on an error. Another Post 3 miscue upped the margin to 4-1 before Dylan Holliday doubled in the fifth marker.
Iain Perry singled in a run in the third and came around on Mason Camp's double to the gap in right-center. The two-bagger was one of four in the game for Post 15.
"A couple big errors in the field cost us. We had a couple of walks in the first inning, but we settled down after that," Moundsville manager Izaak Babiczuk said.
Holliday, Evan Swain and Camp all singled and doubled. Shane Moran had two singles. Caden Parker added a double.
Brady Swain earned the mound win with five innings of two-hit ball. The right-hander struck out six and issued one free pass. Cam Cumpston worked the sixth and seventh, striking out one with a walk.
Tommy Clegg's sacrifice fly in the third accounted for Moundsville's second run.
Babiczuk praised the effort of Hayden Hughes who came on to relieve Mason Markonich in the second inning. He struck out two and walked one.
"He did really well," the manager said. "He located his pitches and got ahead of the batters.
