Yellowjackets send four singles players to state tournament

CLARKSBURG -- It was deja vu all over again for the Williamstown tennis program during Tuesday's Class AA/A Region II Tournament.

Similar to the previous day when the Yellowjackets captured team titles in both the girls and boys division, the script was rewritten during the singles tournament for both brackets.

At Robert C. Byrd High School, Williamstown's Claire Strobl defeated teammate Akhia Miller 8-3 in the finals and joined Cecilia Taverna from Robert C. Burd and McKenzie White from Lincoln as the four state qualifiers out of Region II.

Williamstown nearly qualified three girls for the state meet in Charleston (May 9-11). In the quarterfinal round, Gabi Holl lost a 9-8 (7-1) tiebreaker to White. White then lost to Miller 8-0 in the semifinals. In the other semifinal pairing, Strobl defeated Taverna 8-1.

At the boys site in Shinnston, Williamstown sent two individuals through to the state meet in singles as Yellowjackets' Austin Bosgraf defeated Lincoln's Brandon Gray 8-1 in the finals.

Williamstown's Brady Woodard also qualified for the state meet after reaching the semifinal. Unfortunately, Woodard's win in the quarterfinals came at the expense of teammate Tyler Fenton.

Bosgraf defeated Woodard 8-0 in the semifinals, while Gray won his semifinal with Robert C. Byrd's Jacob Brannon by an 8-1 decision.
