ROANOKE — Parkersburg South rising junior Cameron Fallon punched his ticket into next week’s 105th West Virginia Amateur Championship at The Greenbrier Resort by earning one of six spots left available during Wednesday’s “Last Chance” qualifier at Stonewall Jackson Resort.
Fallon, who is in the field for the second consecutive year, fired a 4-over par 76 to finish third behind co-medalists Adam Gill of Wheeling and Matthew Aman of Bridgeport, who carded respective 75s.
The Patriot, who tried to qualify at Edgewood but lost in a playoff, didn’t get off to a stellar start as he opened with back-to-back bogeys before dropping two more strokes on holes seven and eight en route to a 4-over 40 on the front nine.
However, he got a stroke back after making birdie on the par-4, 13th before making bogeys at No. 15 and No. 17, but finished the round with another birdie on the closing par-5, 18th.
“Was nervous at the start and then settled in and felt more at ease,” admitted Fallon, who finished two strokes ahead of the three-way tie for fourth for the final trio of qualifying spots which went to Charleston’s Chase Wolfe, Lewisburg’s Tyler Beard and Bluefield’s Case Tolliver.
“Was nervous going down the stretch, but birdied the last hole and realized that I was in. Very excited for the opportunity again and want to build off of making it last year, and finishing higher this year.”
Fallon’s teammate Parker Vannoy finished tied for 22nd after carding an 83, while Parkersburg Big Red Jack Louden’s 99 left him alone in 60th.
Also missing out on their final opportunity to qualify were Wahama’s Grant Roush (T14th, 81), Middlebourne’s John Smith (T33rd, 86), Parkersburg’s Kyle Houdyshell (T51st, 92), Harrisville’s Ira Haught (T53rd, 93) and Vienna’s Andrew Morris (T61st, 100).
Fallon will be joined at The Greenbrier Resort by Warren graduate Brandon Fivecoait, Vienna’s Chuck Henderson, Parkersburg’s Ben Palmer as well as Mason County’s Mitchell Roush and Trenton Roush.
