PHS capitalizes on miscues, beats John Marshall 8-4

GLEN DALE — It was a walk in the park for Parkersburg Tuesday afternoon.

The Big Reds registered just three hits in their 8-4 win over John Marshall. The Wood Countians, however, took full advantage of 10 walks, two hit-batters and four Monarch errors in improving to 6-7 on the year.

“Total embarrassment,” John Marshall head coach Mark Cisar said. “We couldn’t throw strikes, we couldn’t field and we acted very poorly. We made it very easy for them today.

“It is amazing that we beat two of the best teams in the state in Morgantown (Monday) and Bridgeport recently. Then we turn around and play like we did today. Embarrassing,” added the former Magnolia High athletic great. “It was a pathetic performance. Hopefully, we can get our act together by Thursday when we play Park.

JM is now 9-10.

Parkersburg struck for two runs in the first inning via one hit, one hit batter, two walks and an error. The Monarchs got one run back in the bottom half of the opening frame as Lex Wilhelm crushed a home run over the dead centerfield fence.

The Big Reds gave themselves some breathing room in the third, pushing across four tallies, nary a hit. Four walks, two errors and a sacrifice fly made it a 6-1 lighting.

Parkersburg tacked on two more runs in the fourth, again doing so hitless. The Big Reds made the most of four more free passes and an error as their lead grew to 8-1.

JM made it an 8-2 issue in the fifth via an RBI double from Donovan Jones.

The Monarchs did make matters somewhat interesting in the seventh.

Two hit-batters and a Tommy Clegg single loaded the sacks. With one out, Cain Martin delivered an RBI single before Isaac Koontz pushed in another run with a groundout. The threat ended with two Monarchs aboard as relief pitcher Landon Bryan recorded a strikeout.

Caden Parker worked the first five innings on the mound for Parkersburg – and was exceptional. He struck out three and walked two on 78 pitches, 55 of which were strikes. Bryan tossed the final two innings, fanning two and passing one.

“We have a lot of respect for John Marshall baseball and Mark Cisar. Anytime you can sweep them in a season it is noteworthy, ” Parkersburg head coach Alan Burns said. “Caden did a real nice job on the mound. He is a great competitor in everything he does.

“I also thought we were very solid defensively. We made all the plays we needed,” he continued. “Scoring eight runs on just three hits is unusual. But 12 free passes really made the difference.

Parkersburg, which downed JM 12-5 in the initial matchup, has now won three straight.

JM utilized three pitchers. Hayden Hughes started. He gave way to Mason Markonich in the third before Michael Clemons entered in the fourth. He pitched the balance of the game.

The Monarchs had seven hits on the day. The Big Reds stranded 11 runners, one more than the hosts.
