VIENNA — It was a wet one on Monday when the Parkersburg Country Club in Vienna hosted the Class AAA, Region IV Tournament to determine who would advance to state. Luckily, the rain stayed a light mist until the last groups were finishing up, meaning that play went on uninterrupted.
Eight teams competed at the par 73 golf course: Cabell Midland, Huntington, Hurricane, Lincoln County, Parkersburg, Parkersburg South, Ripley and Spring Valley. The two teams with the lowest scores as well as the top two individual performers not on those teams advanced to the two-day state tournament in Wheeling (Oct. 3-4).
Hurricane finished in first place with a collective score of 230. The Redskins played quite consistently, with only eight strokes separating their first and fourth best finisher. Savannah Hawkins led things off for Hurricane with a 75, followed by Carson O'Dell (76), Tanner Sutphin (79) and Kellen Pauley (83).
Cabell Midland took home second with a team total of 234. Jack Michael of the Knights had the best round of any individual golfer with a 3-under par 70. Alex White (80), Carson Sergent (84) and Bryson Mabry (89) all had solid rounds and contributed greatly to the second-place finish.
Parkersburg South finished just three strokes behind Cabell Midland with a score of 237. Although the entire team will not be able to participate in the state tournament, their two best finishers will . Cam Fallon (74) and Parkery Vannoy (76) were the two lowest non-team qualifying finishers and will play at state.
Fallon gave his thoughts on how he performed, "I thought I played pretty well. Had a few bad holes, few shots left out there."
Vannoy was similarly critical of his own performance, "Decent round, the putter just kinda went cold on the back nine. Couldn't really buy a putt. Solid round overall."
While the duo may have found flaws in their own game, the pair of Patriots were complimentary of one another, "Obviously proud of Cam for qualifying as well," said Vannoy. Fallon said of his compatriot, " I mean, I'm proud of Parker, he played well today."
Both Fallon and Vannoy shared their thoughts on the upcoming state tournament, with Vannoy saying, "I'm just looking to go in there and have a solid performance both days."
Fallon emphasized the work that will be put in to get ready to head to Wheeling, "Definitely gotta grind the next few days. It'll be here soon, gotta get ready."
The state golf tournament will be played at the Speidel Golf Club at Oglebay Golf Resort. It will be a two-day affair for a total of 36 holes.
