Beverly/Lowell 2 wins from title; Post 15 ousted

LANCASTER, Ohio — After losing its first game of the Ohio Legion Baseball State Tournament on Monday, Beverly/Lowell Post 389/750 has battled all the way back to advance to the final day of the tourney.

Beverly/Lowell edged Yeager-Benson Post 199 2-1 Wednesday at Beavers Field and will play Napoleon Post 300 at 10 a.m. today in a rematch of their state tournament opener, which Napoleon won 2-1.The winner of that game will take on Yeager-Benson at 1:30 p.m. in a winner-take-all matchup for the state championship.

Beverly/Lowell called upon Nate Silvus to take the bump Wednesday and the Morgan Raider came up big. Silvus pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits and one earned run. He was efficient, walking just one batter with no strikeouts. He pitched to contact, and Beverly/Lowell’s defense was strong as always, committing just one error.

Post 389/750 scored a run in the third to take the lead, but Yeager-Benson tied it up in the sixth on Gunner Kalkoff’s RBI double.

William Record pitched 6 1-3 innings for Post 199, walking four and punching out four. Nickey Gutzwiller came on in relief and got one out before Beverly/Lowell walked it off. Both unearned runs were charged to Record.

Wade Pauley was 1 for 1 in the game with three walks and had Beverly/Lowell’s only RBI. Owen Brown was 1 for 2 with a walk and scored both of the team’s runs. Lucas Cox, Easton Eibel, Silvus and Coleman Welsh all singled for the Todd Engle-coached squad.

Bridgeport eliminates Post 15

CHARLESTON — Bridgeport Post 68 used a six-run top of the seventh here Wednesday in the West Virginia American Legion state baseball tournament held at the University of Charleston’s Welch Athletic Complex to eliminate Parkersburg Post 15, 10-6.

Losing pitcher Evan Swain pitched into the sixth inning, but didn’t factor in the decision after going five innings and allowing four hits, three runs, one earned with four walks and a strikeout.

Parkersburg, which ended its summer at 20-13-1 for manager Mike Goodwin, trailed 1-0 after one, but scored three runs in the bottom of the second.

It was 3-2 after four and 4-2 after five, but Bridgeport pushed across two runs in the sixth to square it.

Caden Parker suffered the mound setback and was charged with four runs, but just one earned, in 1 2-3 innings.

Post 15 was outhit 10-6 and committed six errors compared to just one for Post 68.

Closer Dylan Holliday was unable to stop the Bridgeport barrage in the top of the seventh and was charged with three earned runs in relief of Parker.

Brady Swain led Post 15 with a double and three runs-batted-in. Parker also doubled, drove in a run and scored a run. Post 15 also received one RBI apiece from Evan Swain and Bentley Kinzer.

Josiah DeMoss tripled while Colin McCarter and Mason Camp had a single apiece. Carter McLain coaxed two base on balls, stole a base and scored once in the loss.

Bridgeport No. 3 hitter Ben McDougal led the victors by going 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Leadoff batter Aidan Paulsen finished 2 for 4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Post 68, which left a dozen runners on base compared to Parkersburg’s six, also received an RBI apiece from Zach Rohrig, Anthony Dixon and Grant Lively. Dylan Duvall went 2 for 3 and scored a run.
