Williamstown tennis in driver’s seat at state meet

CHARLESTON -- The Williamstown boys tennis team has yet to lose a match in the world series of West Virginia tennis' team competition and now the Yellowjackets have only one opponent standing in their way of a possible Class AA-A championship.

During Thursday's state tournament in Charleston, the format keyed in with the first two rounds of the team division.

In the quarterfinals, top-seeded Williamstown defeated Herbert Hoover 4-0 behind a sweep in the doubles division from Austin Bosgraf and Tyler Fenton (8-2) at No. 1; Brandon Gray and Matthew Easter (8-0) at No. 2; and Gavin Hill and Brady Woodard (8-0) at No. 3, along with Bosgraf's 8-1 win at No. 1 singles.

Williamstown posted another 4-0 win in the semifinals against Point Pleasant. Behind a duplicate lineup at doubles, the Yellowjackets won 8-5 at No. 1; 8-4 at No. 2; and 8-1 at No. 3. Gray's 8-0 win at No. 4 singles accounted for the fourth win.

Williamstown meets third-seeded Charleston Catholic in the finals beginning at 8 a.m. today at the YMCA.

For the Williamstown girls, who entered the tournament seeded No. 1, their postseason path ended in the semifinals with a 4-1 loss to fifth-seeded Logan. Sutton Stewart and Lauren Deem won their match at No. 3 doubles 8-1.

In the quarterfinals, the Yellowjackets blanked Herbert Hoover 4-0 behind a sweep in doubles and Gabi Holl's 8-0 win at No. 4 singles. Wins at doubles included Claire Strobl and Ashtyn McIntyre (8-2) at No. 1; Athenn Stewart and Holl (8-1) at No. 2; and Sutton Stewart and Lauren Deem (8-1) at No. 4.

Class AAA

The third-ranked Big Reds from Parkersburg dropped a hard fought 4-3 defeat to Huntington in the quarterfinals despite wins from No. 2 doubles Isabel Bhati and Sofia Olson; No. 3 doubles Sophie Miller and Ashley Welshans; and Miller at No. 4 singles.
