PARKERSBURG -- Caden Parker went the distance here Tuesday evening at City Park and Cade Goode had a bases-clearing triple to highlight a six-run second as Parkersburg Post 15 handed Meigs County Post 128 a 9-3 setback to snap a three-game skid.
The locals of manager Mike Goodwin, who improved to 5-3 and return to action at 7 p.m. today versus Marietta Post 64 back at Bennett Stump Field, trailed for the only time when Meigs County pushed across a run in the second.
Zack Fields coaxed a free pass from Parker and after Zane Loveday singled, Peyton Owens had an RBI groundout.
That lead was quickly erased as Post 15 sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame.
Eli Reeves got it started with a stand-up double to right and Brodie Wiggins followed with one of his own to center. Izek Baldwin, who was joined by Wiggins with two hits apiece, was then plunked. A Gatlin Donohew sacrifice bunt attempt loaded the bases after he reached on an error. Goode, the No. 9 hitter, proceeded to lace a stand-up three-bagger to center.
Although Carter King followed with a walk, he was caught stealing by Ethyn Barnitz. Losing pitcher Andrew Dobson then got Brett Haskins looking for the second out, but Drew Woofter followed with an RBI double to right. Catcher Bentley Kinzer kept it going with a run-scoring single to center.
Meigs County, now 1-1 with a home game scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday against Glouster Post 414, got one back in the third. Zack Wilbur scored after reaching on a fielder's choice when Loveday drew a bases-loaded RBI free pass. Parker, who allowed seven hits and three earned runs with three walks and five strikeouts, was able to leave the bases loaded after Dalton Mershon grounded back to him.
Baldwin singled with one out in the third and scored when Haskins had an RBI base on balls to make it 8-2.
Post 15 tacked on their final two runs in the fourth. Reeves's one-out walk was followed by a Wiggins single. Baldwin then delivered a run-scoring knock to left and Donohew plated Wiggins with an RBI groundout.
Parker, who held Meigs County to 1 of 11 with runners in scoring position, gave up a one-out double to Dodson in the fifth. He scored on Loveday's RBI groundout to first baseman Evan Swain.
"I was very happy with Caden's composure throughout the entire game," admitted Goodwin. "He got into a couple jams and worked his way out of it and he never showed any emotion either way.
"Those are good qualities of a good pitcher. The lower part of our order tonight really came through and did a nice job, and that says a lot about the depth and quality of our kids."
King and Haskins, who hit 1-2 in the order, were on base five times combined with walks but failed to score. The shortstop Haskins also had the web gem of the day in the third when he made a diving stop of a Wilbur shot behind second base and managed to flip the ball to Goode from the ground for a force out.
Owens worked the final 4 1-3 innings for Post 128. He allowed three hits, three earned runs and walked five with six strikeouts.
