PARKERSBURG -- Freshman Dylan Holliday delivered a complete-game victory in his first career start for Parkersburg South here Saturday afternoon at Hank Greenburg Field to help the host Patriots split a twinbill with Wheeling Park.
In the opener, a pair of errors in the top of the ninth allowed the visiting Patriots (4-1) to secure a 7-4 victory.
PSHS, which improved to 3-5 for skipper Matt Emerick and returns to action at 5 p.m. Monday at John Marshall, used a three-run bottom of the fifth in game two to help secure the split.
"We left way too many guys on base in game one," admitted Emerick. "Didn't make enough plays to win, but I'm proud of the way they bounced back."
Holliday, who went 4 for 5 in game one with teammate Nic Menarchek finishing 2 for 5 with two runs-batted-in, scattered eight hits and allowed three earned runs with three walks and five strikeouts.
"Dylan Holliday threw the ball really well and we had enough hits and made enough plays to win," added the coach. "Pretty much a total team win.
"I'm proud of the way we bounced back. Wheeling Park is a good team. Anytime you can get a win off them it's a good day."
Luke Marsh's RBI single plated Nate Bittinger, who reached on an error to start game two, for a quick 1-0 lead for Park.
Mason Camp, who finished 2 for 3 with a pair of two-baggers, doubled in the bottom of the first and scored on Holliday's RBI single to center.
WPHS used consecutive singles from Ryan Conrad and Nick Tsoras to get things going in the second. The visitors led 3-1 after a Brayden Kupsky RBI double and an RBI groundout from Bittinger.
Emerick's club got a run back in the third when Menarchek's double was followed by one from Camp.
In the last of the fifth, Park made back-to-back errors which allowed Menarchek and Camp to reach. Bentley Kinzer then delivered an RBI single down the left-field line and Cayden Mackey came through with a sacrifice fly. Kinzer made it 5-3 when he crossed after a wild pitch.
Holliday's walk to Tsoras started the seventh and he later scored on Bittinger's sacrifice fly. In the seventh, Holliday allowed a one-out double to Gian Degenova, but struck out Conrad and then got Tsoras to ground back to him to end the game.
South's Aiden Blake joined Camp in going 2 for 3.
Quinn Jamison worked four innings and didn't factor into the decision for WPHS, which had the mound setback charged to Dylan Hodgson.
Kupsky worked the final three frames with a trio of punchouts to earn the mound win in game one. Josh Gribble went six innings with five strikeouts for South in the opener, but Ty Davis (3 IP, 1 SO) was charged with the loss after the hosts gave up the three unearned runs.
