Patriot bowling teams win state championships

PARKERSBURG -- Add bowling to the list of sports firmly entrenched in the Parkersburg and Parkersburg South crosstown rivalry.
This past weekend at Pike Street Lanes, South pulled off a gut-wrenching victory over PHS in the championship match while claiming its third consecutive West Virgnia state title.
"When it came down to the championship match, South and PHS is a pretty good rivalry," South coach Tom Boso said. "The stress was right up there for kids. On a scale of 1 to 10 on that last match, the stress level was probably a 9 1/2 to a 10 .
"PHS brought a bunch of baseball players to watch. If you weren't watching, you knew kids bowling threw a good ball by the sound of the crowd erupting."
Due to COVID restrictions, the field involved a total of five teams this year -- two from South, and one representative apiece from PHS, Riverside and Woodrow Wilson.
South Blue, which brought home the state title, featured seniors Caden Bell, Brandon Holliday and Josh Smith, along with freshmen Logan Fling and Dylan Holliday.
This past January, the Patriots placed second in the Class 4A-5A division at the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Meet which took place at Pike Street Lanes as well.
The South White squad also competed at the varsity level. Members included Senior Brennan Erb, junior Allison Curtis and freshmen Kyle Cox, Corissa Snider and Rylea Mercer.
At the junior varsity level, South's lone entry also placed first among a field of seven teams. Team members featured senior Logan Nutter, juniors Jessica Cook and Anna Sams, and freshman Fisher Life.
South graduates six seniors from its current roster, but Boso and his assistant coach Gary Fling are anticipating a quality group out of the returning freshmen.
"We have a good crop of kids for next year," Boso said. "We are losing a bunch of good seniors, but the ones coming up are just as good."
