Neck and Neck: Ripley girls, PHS girls finish tied at Kim Nutter Invite

PARKERSBURG -- The Ripley girls tied host Parkersburg with 105 points on a cold Friday night at Stadium Field in the annual Kim Nutter Invitational.
Head coach Lia Fleek's defending Class AAA shuttles state champions were one of three winning relays for the Big Reds.
The boys from Point Pleasant had wins from Cody Shultz (discus, 152-5), Luke Derenberger (long jump, 19-2.25) and the 4×2 to top Wheeling Park, 110-104. WPHS was led by Jerrae Hawkins Jr. with wins in the 100 (11.28) and 200 (22.95). Jackson Dearth swept the hurdles with times of 16.39 in the 110 and 42.48 in the 300 to help Parkersburg South finish third (101) with Ripley (90) and Morgantown (88) following.
Morgantown's girls finished third with 103 points and set a new meet record in the 4×8 with a time of 9:27.21 thanks to Amelia Summers, Jennifer Opalko, Lea Hatcher and Irene Riggs.
Parkersburg South's Mo Akita (100, 13.32; 800, 2:25.18) and Point Pleasant's Addy Cottrill were the only other double-winners. The Big Black won the shot (35-4) and discus (117-10).
Lily Wharton, who ran 48.03 to win the 300 hurdles, combined with Kendal Domenick (2nd, 100H), Katie Rutherford and Addison Gherke to clock a victorious 1:07.94 in the shuttles. Wharton, Rutherford, Payton Harvey and Aubrey Lantz won the 4×4 (4:22.89). Gherke, Harvey and Domenick paired with Destyni Hastings to top the field in the 4×2 (1:53.40).
Tori Fisher edged teammate Opal Huffman, the 400 champ with a time of 1:01.83, in the long jump -- 15-7 to 15-2.75 -- to lead the Ripley girls.
Viking Jazmin Parsons was runner-up to Mohigan Morgan Ryan, 9-0 to 8-6, in the pole vault.
Ripley's girls also went 1-2 in the 1600 thanks to Ellie Hosaflook (5:31.26) and Haleigh McCune. Hosaflook was second in the 800.
Parkersburg's other gold came in the 3200 from Anna Martin, who topped South's Gwen Wigal, 13:27.53 to 14:41.78.
Also winning individual events were Point Pleasant's Ellie Wood in the 100 hurdles (16.49), John Marshall's Camryn Mowder in the high jump (5-0) and Morgantown's Izayah Everett in the 200 (27.44).
Franklin Angelos led the Big Red boys of head man Rod O'Donnell with a runner-up finish in the 800 to Morgantown's Preston Core -- 2:01.90 to 2:02.98.
Ripley had wins from high jumper Jake Harvey, who went 6-2 to trump teammate Connor Casto's 5-10, as well as Chase Pepper (400, 52.95) and Frankie Winter via a throw of 47 feet, 7 inches to win the shot put. Harvey also was runner-up in the long jump.
Parkersburg South's shuttles team of Dearth, Miciah Jones, Brayden Wise and Zachary Parsons clocked a 1:00.48 to best the field.
Other individual event winners were Park's Jonah Nizami (1600, 4:43.06) and Seth Franke (3200, 10:26.91) and Morgantown's Lucas Howell, who cleared 13 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault.
