WILLIAMSTOWN — Freshman Alyssa Sauro of Williamstown set a new Ryan Jobes Invitational record on Saturday and helped the host Yellowjackets top Ritchie County, 167-130.

West Virginia University signee Olivia Cress of Ritchie County also set a new meet record with a leap of 5 feet, 5 inches in the high jump. The senior Rebel amassed high-point honors with 40 thanks to a winning leap of 14-9.75 in the long jump along with sweeping the hurdles (100H, 17.21; 300H, 47.88).

Sauro’s mark came during the 3200 when she crossed in 10:52.62. She also won the 1600 with a clocking of 5:10.81.

Head coach Zach Hall’s ‘Jackets also had top of the podium finishes from Ella McMullen (200, 28.33), Madelyn Anderson (PV, 8-6) and Becca Shamblin, who topped Rebel Macy Hilvers in the discus, 89-6 to 89-2. Hilvers bested ‘Jacket Kyndra Johnson in the shot put, 30-8 to 30-5.5.

WHS also had a runner-up in the pole vault from Emma Berman, who ran legs with McMullen and Brookelyn Reynolds on the ‘Jackets’ victorious 4×1 (Izabel Zide, 54.05), the 4×2 (Sydney Anderson, 1:55.51) and the 4×4 (Sauro, 4:21.44). Ava Lightfritz, Reagan Ortiz, Alexis Wynn and Brianna Winsett finished in 10:40.60 to capture the 4×8.

Hall gave his thoughts on the team effort and Sauro’s record breaking performance.

“It was a less than ideal temperature for everybody, but the team didn’t complaint. They kept it quiet from me, I guess,” he said. “I think we were all getting tired of just practicing. The girls like seeing other teams, so they just went out and did it. (Sauro) is really, really good at what she does. In the first meet, she breaks two school records, and she’s going to keep breaking them throughout the year.”

Cress’s new high jump record is nothing out of the ordinary for her at this point, and head coach Lindsey Garrett talked about the feat.

“Oliva set that record in the high jump, clearing 5’5,” she said. “I’m very proud of her, and I look forward to a season with many broken records from her.”

The Yellowjackets couldn’t top the Magnolia quartet of Shaela Holliday, Emma Spitzer, Jenna Blain and Reese Hale in the shuttles (1:17.11 to 1:21.44).

University, which finished third with 95 points, received gold from Sierra Lanham (100, 13.57) and Helen Honecker (400, 1:05.79). Eastern’s Erica Durst topped Ortiz by less than a second in the 800 with a time of 2:23.61.

Gus Morrison won the 400 (54.52), the 110 high hurdles (16.76), the 300 intermediate hurdles (42.36) and the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 8 inches, but the Ritchie County boys had to settle for runner-up team honors behind University, 131-122.

Ritchie County’s J.D. Henderson cleared 5 feet, 8 inches to win the high jump and also ran a leg on the Rebels’ victorious 4×2 team that finished in 1:41.66 with Garrett Copeland, Ethan Haught and Alex Owens.

Host Williamstown, which finished third with 106 points, had individual victories from Brice Doolittle (PV, 9-6) and Aiden Corbett (shot, 43-6).

Wheeling Central teammates Rylie Watkins (100, 12.45) and Cooper Blair (200, 25.02) helped the Maroon Knights to 54 team points and a fourth place finish.

Eastern’s Brayden O’Brein captured the 3200 (10:02.62) while University won the other running events thanks to Drew Zundell (1600, 4:35.91) and Rocco DeVincent (800, 2:03.93). Hawk Colin McBee threw 133 feet to win the discus.

Paden City’s Jasup Spragg, Julian Landauer, Logan Smith and Shane Anderson finished in 1:08.36 to secure the gold in shuttles.
