MT. ZION -- The end of the week probably couldn't arrive any sooner for the top-ranked Titans girls basketball team from Gilmer County.
Two nights after surviving a scare at home in a one-point win over Doddridge County and extend its winning streak to 15 games, Gilmer County suffered its first loss of the season in a 63-55 defeat Thursday night at Calhoun County.
Behind 17 points and 14 rebounds from Joselynn Yeager, Calhoun County improved to 12-4 and handed coach Kevin Boak a school-record 57th career victory in his fifth season with the Red Devils.
A total of four Red Devils scored in double figures, including Savannah Cunningham, with 15 points, six assists and six rebounds. Trista Arnold and Ella Hess both pitched in 12 points. Hess also filled in the stat sheet with seven rebounds and three blocks. Josie Montgomery just missed out on a double-double after finishing with 11 rebounds, seven points, five assists and four steals.
Other than a scoreless third quarter, Gilmer County's Malaysia Moore paced the Titans' scoring output and finished with 25 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter. Teammate Carrah Ferguson picked up the scoring slack in the third quarter after hitting two 3-pointers as part of a 10-point frame.
Calhoun County led by as many as 16 points (54-38) in the fourth quarter. The Titans cut the deficit to as few as eight points with just less than two minutes remaining before the Red Devils closed out the win.
