PARKERSBURG — Late buckets by Jensen Varner and Kaleigh Rexroad put the finishing touches on Class quad-A, sixth-ranked Parkersburg’s 92-41 dominating senior night victory here Friday inside Memorial Fieldhouse against Riverside in a Mountain State Athletic Conference affair.

The Big Reds’ quartet of seniors — Taylor Miller, Kisten Roberts, London Hood and Hayley McCale — combined to match the entire scoring output for the now 3-14 Warriors, who welcome in South Charleston on Monday.

“First off, I want to say these seniors have been tremendous competitors and they really push us in the right direction more times than not,” said first-year PHS boss Chris Murray, who got 14 points apiece from Miller and Roberts with the Tucker County transfer Hood adding nine and McCale eight.

“I’m really proud of their leadership and just their attitude on how we compete. For that, it makes it easy to come here and work with them because they are just competitors. They get after it so it’s very enjoyable and practices are enjoyable.”

Hood, who had a team-high six rebounds, took the opening tip from Roberts, raced to the bucket and was fouled. She hit 1 of 2 from the charity stripe to give PHS the lead for good.

Roberts got the rebound off Hood’s miss and converted. Brilynn Florence, who also finished with 14 markers, then assisted on a Miller 3 before the Warriors got on the board via two of Sydasia Williams’ team-high 11 counters.

PHS, now 16-4 overall and winners of a dozen straight with a 6 p.m. varsity only contest set for Saturday at Hurricane, led 36-13 after Miller had a block that led to a Hood bucket. It was 44-14 at 5:38 of the second when Miller converted a three-point play. Kenzie Irvin’s steal and assist to Mallory Crowder closed the half for the Warriors, who trailed 50-23.

Trinity Balog, who had a career-high 26 points in Thursday’s win against Parkersburg South, finished with 10 markers and that included a trifecta to give the red and white a 75-37 bulge entering the fourth.

“We actually like this week because it gives us an opportunity to kind of prepare for what’s coming down the road,” coach Murray said of the Big Reds playing their fourth game in five days. “It gives us kind of a tournament mindset.

“Five games in six days, it’s not easy. We understood that, but we wanted to try three games in a row to see what our mental mindset would be going through that. I’m really proud of them for that.”

Alyssa Lambert finished with eight points for the Warriors, who also got four counters and a game-high seven boards from Riley Starsick. Miller had a game-high six assists.
