Warriors’ Smith scores 1,000th point in Monday night victory

VINCENT -- Parkersburg South is not alone when it comes to Warren senior Abbie Smith being a mismatch for most opponents.
Monday night at Warren High School, Smith scored a game-high 29 points -- and became the Warriors' seventh girls basketball player to surpass 1,000 points for her career -- as Warren defeated South, 63-39.
When the night began, Smith needed 12 points to reach the milestone. The moment belonged to her when she made the front-end of a two-shot foul at the 5:35 mark of the second quarter.
"Early on, we were slow in the press -- we felt like that gave us the best chance to limit (Smith's touches if that's possible," South coach Ed Davis said. "Obviously in the halfcourt, she hurt us. In the second half, we did a better job on her."
The Warriors, used a 12-2 run early in the first quarter to build a double-digit margin at 14-4 and never trailed in the ballgame. The Patriots slied the deficit to 16-10 on consecutive 3-pointers from Hannah Wingrove, but from the start of the second quarter with Warren leading 20-10, the Warriors were able to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
South, which slipped to 5-8, was unable to get a bucket in crucial situation and failed on several opportunities to close to single digits. The Patriots entered halftime trailing 36-22 and the margin stayed status quo 15 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Over the next three-plus minutes, Warren put the game out of reach by outscoring the Patriots 10-1.
Alex Frazee added 19 points on 11-of-12 shooting from the free throw line as Warren (11-5)extended its winning streak to six straight games.
"We were a step slow tonight," Davis said.
"Take nothing away from Warren. They have been playing really well. They are playing well at the right time."
Skylar Bosley led South with 10 points, while Wingrove added nine points. Getting a start in the post to as part of the scheme to contain Smith was Patriots' Abbey Smith, who added seven points.
