MORGANTOWN -- The second ever wrestling match between Glenville State College and West Virginia University took place Friday evening, but the Pioneers managed just one victory in a 40-3 setback. Division II Glenville State, which lost 28-6 to the Mountaineers back in 1975 during the only other meeting in Glenville, wasn't able to dent the scoreboard until the 197-pound match. Braxton County graduate Jordan Williams, ranked No. 11 in Division II by InterMat, led 6-5 going into the third period against WVU's Jace Bradbury and secured an 8-5 triumph.

WVU heavyweight Michael Wolfgram finished off the match with a 13-3 major decision against Gavin Shamblin. Fourth-year Mountaineer head coach Tim Flynn's program started the dual with a 13-2 major decision triumph by Colton Crousias against Kevin Meloni at 125.

At 133, GSC's Devin Easton had the match tied 2-2 early in the first period, but Michael Dolan was able to work his way to a 20-5 technical fall. Mountaineer Caleb Rea recorded the first takedown in his 141-pound match versus Ethan Hardy, but the Pioneer used a reversal to square it only to have Rea get an escape and take a 3-2 lead after one. Rea was able to hold off Hardy for a 6-4 decision.

Glenville State 149-pounder Gavin Quiocho, who is ranked 13th by InterMat, kept his match scoreless until late in the first when Jeff Boyd registered a takedown. Boyd never trailed in his 9-5 victory.

The G-men of head coach Dylan Cottrell, who was the first WVU wrestler in school history to win a Big 12 championship back in 2017 at 165 pounds, fell behind 21-0 when Mountaineer 157-pounder Alex Hornfeck received a win via forfeit.

Undefeated Peyton Hall improved to 10-0 as the WVU 165-pounder needed 2:13 to pin Hunter Jones. Mountaineer Anthony Carman also had a mat slapper against Cole Houser in 1:44 at 184 pounds.

In the 174-pound match, ex-Mountaineer Hunter DeLong of GSC ended up falling 10-4 to Scott Joll.

The Pioneers dropped to 10-2 on the season and return to action on Sunday in Danville, Va., at the Averett University Duals. WVU also is in action at 2 p.m. Sunday when the Mountaineers head to VMI.

South's Wright, Edwards alive at Ironman

∫ Seven-time defending Class AAA state champion Parkersburg South had eight entries into the Walsh Ironman Invitational.

Following the first day of action on Friday, the Patriots of head coach Shaun Smith had two grappler still alive.

At 175, Gage Wright won his first two matches and advanced to the quarterfinals. The Patriot sophomore had an eight-second pin and also recorded a 6-3 decision. However, Wright needed a big win in order to reach the semifinals and had to square off against Gabe Arnold of Wyoming Seminary (Pa.). Arnold, who is ranked No. 1 in the country, earned a 16-7 major decision.

The only other PSHS grappler left alive is 190-pounder Aydan Edwards, who also is 2-1. Edwards had a 16-second mat slapper and an 18-second pin sandwiched between a 9-0 setback.
