Tigers stay unbeaten, win sectional title over Sheridan

DEVOLA -- Sheridan entered Jerry Brock Field with confidence Wednesday evening after winning its first ever tournament game over New Lexington in overtime earlier in the week.
However, the Generals quickly learned why Marietta is the top seed in the district as the Tigers dominated their way to an 11-0 victory to claim a Division II sectional championship.
Less than two minutes into the match, Marietta had already taken a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Brody McGregor and Dillon Meagle.
The Tigers' speed was too much to handle for Sheridan, which watched Marietta generate shot opportunities seemingly at will.
Luke Carpenter and Brady Bevis did all they could in between the pipes for the Generals as they combined for double digit saves, but Marietta is clicking on all cylinders right now and has its sights set on a deep postseason run.
Mac Threatt made it 3-0 when he scored on David Sarver's assist in the ninth minute. Sarver added a goal of his own in the 15th minute to make it 4-0.
Cayden Wheeler scored on a header to make it 5-0 in the 20th minute before Kamden Lankford tallied a goal less than a minute later.
Cash Wheeler scored a goal in the 27th minute, which he followed up with a celebratory backflip, and Sarver tacked on another goal to put the Tigers up 8-0 at halftime.
Meagle scored again in the first minute of the second half, while Threatt tacked on another goal two minutes later. Threatt now has 28 goals on the season to lead MHS.
Wheeler capped the scoring with a goal in the 59th minute.
For Marietta, step one was winning the East Central Ohio League, which they clinched earlier this month. Step two was winning a sectional title, which is now checked off the list. Up next is winning a district championship, and that journey starts Tuesday. Marietta will play the winner of Hillsboro and Logan Elm at a sight to be determined. Tuesday's winner will advance to the district championship next Thursday at Zane Trace High School in Chillicothe.
The Todd Morris-coached Tigers are now 15-0-1 on the season.
Elsewhere in sectional boys soccer action, Warren fell to Athens 2-1 and finished the 2021 season with a 4-9-5 record.
