ELIZABETH -- The Class A No. 1 Doddridge County Bulldogs picked up their ninth straight win over hosting No. 5 Wirt County Tigers 33-7 in the battle of top five teams Friday night at Wilson-Eisman Field.
After allowing a quick score in the opening minutes of the first quarter, the Bulldogs (5-0) scored 33 unanswered points to tie the all-time series at 15 games apiece.
And also extended their winning streak to 33 games in the regular season.
The Bulldogs offense did the majority of their damage in the running department, rushing for 377 yards as a team.
Just in the third quarter alone, the Bulldogs were able to have seven play and 11 play drives all ending with touchdowns.
Senior running back Reese Burnside had a game-high 199 rushing yards on 13 carries and reached the end zone twice on the ground.
Burnside also reached the endzone on a 60-yard scoop and score in the first quarter.
In addition, Burnside had two touchdowns called back due to penalties in the second quarter, one rushing and receiving.
Junior running back Dylan Knight reached paydirt once off an eight-yard run that made multiple Tiger defenders miss in the third quarter. Knight was the leading receiver with 23 yards on two catches.
Quarterback junior Jared Jones rushed for 47 yards on five carries, along with throwing for 37 passing yards on five for eight passing.
The junior however was picked off twice by the Tigers defense.
"Our team this year has a lot of people contributing and it's been that way all season. They work hard, the key is to get better. I felt like we got better tonight, from where we were last week," Bulldog head coach Bobby Burnside later said on Reese Burnside's big day on the ground. "I will give my assistant coaches some credit. They made a few adjustments when they were loading the box. We find a way to get his (Reese) speed out on the edge. We did that tonight and he broke them. "
The Tigers struck first on the scoreboard, off a running back pass from Tiger senior Garrett Parsons found receiver Kolton Parsons down the visitors' sidelines for an 82-yard touchdown at the 10:28 mark. The kick was good from Shelby Simonton to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead.
Wirt County (3-1) was unable to get much going after that, the closest Wirt got to scoring was an 18-yard field goal that was missed by sophomore Cole Winnell with 9:42 in the second.
Wirt County couldn't get into a rhythm in the run game for the entire game, only rushing for 23 yards as a team. Senior Garrett Parsons had a team in both rushing yards (15) carries (10).
Tiger quarterback Dylan Lowe had 77 passing yards, but also an interception.
Parsons had 128 receiving yards and the lone touchdown on the night.
"Obviously they had a really big momentum shift with that trick play. You know coach (Jason) Hickman really turned them around to having a great season. What was big for us was with the offensive line. We played a lot better on that end and we were able to finish and drive to the points. That was the biggest thing," Burnside said.
