Ritchie in second at Class A Challenge
ELLENBORO -- Following Friday’s first day of competition at the Class A Challenge, host Ritchie County trails defending single-A state champ Greenbrier West, 71-69.
South Harrison (66), St. Marys (57) and Magnolia (55) followed in the top five, but aren’t far ahead of Doddridge County (52.5), Wirt County (49) and Ravenswood (45.5).
Head coach Alan Davis’ Rebels have seven grapplers in the semifinals with Brady Layman (113), Kodi Camp (120), Jeremy Darnold (126), Eric Darnold (132), Kayden Procacina (152), Kaleb Kovacs (170) and 195-pounder Hunter Leggett.
Wiley Houser at 145, Clayton Gray at 195, Cody Houser at 220 along with heavyweight Marshall Norman each advanced to the semifinals for St. Marys, which also has junior varsity 220-pounder Dylan Templeton one win away from the finals.
Also making the semifinals locally are at 106: Wirt County’s Phillip Balis and Doddridge County’s Dawson Pumphrey; 113: Wirt’s Cole Wager is set to take on Layman; 120: Camp faces Wirt’s Kolton Parsons while Bulldog Riley Curran has Magnolia’s Jason Beisel; 126: Wirt’s AJ Garrett; 132: Ravenswood’s Joe Chambers; 138: Ravenswood’s Cody Smith faces Bulldog Reee Burnside; 145: Houser faces Ravenswood’s Elijah Newcomb with Tyler’s Austin Timmons on the other side of the bracket; 152: Procacina takes on Bulldog Dylan Knight with Silver Knight Trenton Huffman in the other bracket; 160: Magnolia’s Trent Mitchell faces Tiger Trent Richards; 182: Ravenswood’s Chase Hood; 195: Gray takes on Magnolia’s James Stillwagoner and Mikey Hamrick of the Blue Eagles is alive at heavyweight opposite of Norman.

Calhoun County 46, Montcalm 38
MT. ZION -- Nick Moore and Adam Parsons both threw up double-double efforts as Calhoun County picked up a 46-38 win over Montcalm here Friday evening.
The pairs high energy effort helped break open a 16-14 game at halftime.
Moore aided with a stats-stuffing evening of 10 points, 13 rebounds, five blocks and four steals. Parsons tacked on a game-high 18 points with 12 boards.
Montcalm weathered the storm, but couldn’t get the lead in the final half. They were outscored 29-24.
Keith Casinar, who buried four 3s, led the group with 14 points.
Greenbrier West 71, Tyler Consolidated 68
KIDWELL -- Mark Rucker nearly had a triple-double and Tyler Consolidated nearly pulled off an upset on undefeated Greenbrier West, but it was not to be as the Silver Knights fell 71-68.
Rucker finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and three steals for TCHS, which fell to 3-14 and visits St. Marys Tuesday. Caleb Strode led the Knights with 18 points, Gage Huffman added 15 and Justin Bowman netted 10.
Greenbrier West, now 12-0, had five players reach double figures. Chase Hagy led the way with a game-high 19 points followed by Lawson Baughan’s 15, Chase McClung’s 14, Chase Boggs’ 13 and Kaden Peck’s 10.
Paw Paw 73, Paden City 69 (2 OT)
PAW PAW -- Freshman Joel Moore poured in a career-high 32 points here Friday night for visiting Paden City, but it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats were upended by Paw Paw in double overtime, 73-69.
Ty Cain added 21 points for the 0-14 Wildcats, who play host Tuesday to Clay-Battelle.
Paw Paw was led by Kobe Ridgeway’s 30-point effort and Dylan Moreland’s 26 points.
Point Pleasant 69, Ravenswood 62
POINT PLEASANT -- Jaycob Creel’s 27-point, 10-rebound double-double wasn’t enough for visiting Ravenswood here Friday night as the Red Devils allowed 49 second-half points during a 69-62 setback at Point Pleasant.
The Big Blacks, now 5-8 with a game tonight at South Gallia, were led by Hunter Bush’s 24 points and Kyler Morrow’s 20. Eric Chapman pitched in 14.
Ravenswood, which led 24-20 at the half, dropped to 8-7 and plays host to top-ranked Williamstown on Tuesday. Matthew Carte added 10 points while Trey Mandrake had nine counters, three boards, four assists and two steals for the Red Devils.
Grace Christian 60, Wood County Christian 51
WILLIAMSTOWN -- The second period is one Wood County Christian would like to have back after a 60-51 loss to Grace Christian here Friday.
The Wildcats scored just three points, but were consistent with 16 in the other three quarters. Wood County even held the lead through three periods of play, 35-34. But Grace took control with a 26-16 point advantage in the final period.
Eli Foster’s 22 points and Ricky Tanner’s 16 markers paced Grace Christian. Garrett Napier’s 19 markers and Camden Huck’s 11 points led the way for the Wildcats.
Ritchie County 76, Tygarts Valley 42
MILL CREEK -- Ritchie County received three double-digit scoring efforts in a 76-42 road win over Tygarts Valley Friday night.
Ethan Haught poured in 17, while Graden McKinney and Joey James scored 16 a piece as the Rebels brought their record back to .500.
Ritchie overwhelmed the Bulldogs with offense and defense in the opening half. Rebel scorers tallied 35 points to just 13 for their hosts.
A sparkling shooting percentage of 59% helped the Rebels keep the Bulldogs at arms length.
Logan George’s 16 points led Tygarts Valley.
Clay County 64, Roane County 61
SPENCER -- Roane County’s third quarter sank an otherwise solid effort by the Raiders in a 64-61 home loss to LKC East rival Clay County Friday evening.
Roane tallied just six points in the period after halftime. They then tried to pull off the upset with 24 points in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t overcome the Panthers.
Brayden Miller led the way with 22 points, while Isaac Ryan (14) and Lee Keaton (13) also tallied double digits in the scoring column.
Curtis Litton paced the visitors with 20 points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Williamstown 84, Notre Dame 57
CLARKSBURG -- It was a true team effort for Williamstown in an 84-57 road win over Notre Dame Friday night.
Everyone on Fred Sauro’s Yellowjackets scored as they used a 27-8 first-quarter spurt to assure a rebound from Thursday evening’s loss to Belpre.
The Irish played the ‘Jackets evenly after the opening period put the damage had been done.
Lakyn Joy and Kayli Sauro both poured in 17 points. Most of Sauro’s came from behind the arc as she hit five triples. Joy scored six jumpers.
Bailee Yokum led four double figure efforts for the Irish with her 17 points.
