Malaki Sylvia helps Patriots roll past Chieftains, 67-40

PARKERSBURG -- Logan made a couple of early turnovers here Saturday night at Rod Oldham Athletic Center and host Parkersburg South bolted to a 16-2 cushion and never looked en route to a 67-40 victory.
Malaki Sylvia went for game-highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds for the 8-5 Patriots, who also watched Cam Marks go for nine points and seven boards to go along with game-highs of eight dimes and four steals.
"We got Ripley on the road Thursday and then Saturday at Huntington," PSHS first-year head coach Brett Rector said about the start of a four-game road trip.
"Bouncing back is great, but we got to stop bouncing back. We got to string wins and be consistent. I was so frustrated on Thursday (road loss at Wheeling Park).
"Like tonight, you see how good we can be. We had Morgantown and Park where we just laid eggs. No juice. No effort. It's so frustrating because we can be so good. We've had those two, three, four games where we've just been awful. I know it's easier said than done, but they did a good job tonight."
Tegan Myers led the 4-14 Chieftains, who welcome Chillicothe to town on Tuesday, with 20 points. Justin Wolfe scored a baker's dozen and had a team-high seven boards. Nolan Robinette contributed five points and five caroms in the setback.
Seese's putback for part of his 10 points 64 seconds into the affair put the hosts ahead for good. Nathan Currey, who drained a trio of 3s and had 12 points, followed with his first trifecta. Marks then hit from deep. Sylvia had eight points in the first quarter as Logan trailed 20-8.
Logan cut it to eight at 22-14 with 4:33 left in the half thanks to a Wolfe deuce and two buckets by Myers, whose last make was assisted by Colton Ruff. PSHS then went on a 9-2 spurt, which was highlighted by a steal and stuff from Sylvia, for a 31-16 bulge at the 2:02 mark. Currey sank two freebies with no time left on the clock for 35-21 Patriot halftime advantage.
A pair of errant passes to open the second half quickly put the Chieftains in an 18-point hole as Marks and Sylvia converted lay-ins. When Jake Hogsett knocked down a 3 with 2:40 left in third, PSHS led 49-29.
Logan, which trailed 52-33 entering the fourth and went a span of 4:21 between field goals on 0 of 7 shooting, was still behind 54-35 after Sylvia made a pass to Jeff Tucker, who converted from the block.
Sylvia, who had three steals, then went to work and tallied nine straight, including a three-point play, as the Patriots got late baskets from Seese and Jyles Johnson via a Caleb Schaffer assist to cap the scoring output.
