Local grapplers perform well at state

HUNTINGTON -- Long before Saturday night’s championship finals got underway inside Mountain Health Arena, the team races already were decided.

Parkersburg South, Point Pleasant and Greenbrier West proved too strong for the rest of the field in their respective classes. Ritchie County was the single-A state runner-up.

Head coach Shaun Smith’s Patriots clinched their sixth straight triple-A crown following 170-pounder Casch Somerville’s consolation semi pin. Somerville, who finished 5-1 with five pins, concluded his senior year with a third-place showing after sticking Brooke’s Max Camilletti in 32 seconds.

In the 138-pound consolation finals, Parkersburg’s Bo Moler nipped South’s Ian Irizarry, 7-6. However, the Patriot coaching staff was deducted a team point after the match.

Patriot 113-pound freshman Nathan Ford took third and ended his campaign with a pin of Wheeling Park’s Cody Taggart in 2:27.

Big Red senior Chace Mathess rebounded from Friday night’s semifinal setback to St. Albans freshman Elijah Edge by finishing third. He pinned Musselman’s Parker Bentley in the consolation finals.

“I was glad to see them finish off their careers as Big Reds with battling back and finishing third, not only for the team but for themselves,” stated Big Red head man Matt Littleton.

“They represent us as what we want Big Reds to be in all aspects. Obviously, you want to see them win it all, but glad they finished it out strong and the right way.”

PSHS also received fourth-place showings from Devin Easton (120), Trent Jones (126), Ian Irizarry (138) and 195-pounder Oscar Lemus. Noah Buckalew finished fifth at 182.

Ripley’s only consolation grappler on Saturday morning was 195-pound senior Austin Boggess, who finished fifth.

Ritchie County senior Kayden Procacina helped the Rebel cause by taking fourth at 152.

Calhoun County 113-pound sophomore Jett Sampson finished sixth and was the only Red Devil placer.

Magnolia 195-pound senior James Stillwagoner also took sixth after falling 8-1 to Clay County freshman Noah Casto.

Wirt County teammates Kolton Parsons (120) and Logan Powell (132) each placed fifth. Doddridge County was led by 106-pound freshman Dawson Pumphrey, who finished fourth.

Braxton County was aided in earning team runner-up honors in double-A by heavyweight Quin Meador placing third. Seth Meador was fourth at 195 while Eagles Colton Moore (170) and Sturgis May (220) each took fifth.

Clay County also had a consolation finals victory from 220-pounder Colton Casto. Panther 182-pounder Riley Perkins was sixth.
