PARKERSBURG–The Williamstown middle school volleyball team put the finishing touches on its perfect season, sweeping Jackson 25-18 and 25-13 Tuesday night inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center.
Williamstown’s Kyndra Johnson gave Jackson’s defenders fits all night, from not being able to return serves, to Johnson finding holes in the Generals’ defense.
The seventh-grader finished with 13 points, six of which came off aces.
Trying to avenge their only two losses in the regular season, Jackson was determined to get the best of the Yellowjackets where it mattered the most.
Jackson took the lead out of the gates and held on for a good portion, growing the lead as a big as four points.
Down for the majority of the first set, Williamstown took its the first lead of the match off a kill by Becca Shamblin.
Later, down 18-15, Williamstown rattled off a 10-0 scoring run thanks in part to Johnson’s serves. Johnson had five aces and got a kill from Annie Uhl to win the first set 25-18.
Similar to the first set, Jackson was able to keep it close at the start, but Williamstown went on a run that the Generals were unable to stop.
Johnson racked up two aces and one kill off an assist from Claire Strobl. Riley Landis scored the last two points for the ‘Jackets.
Shamblin was second with six points and Uhl had five.
“It really was them working during the offseason and playing travel ball. To the parents being dedicated to getting them in the camps and to get them to the travel ball tournaments,” Yellowjacket head coach Cassie Herrick said. “Them just working hard on the drills to get better. It was a team effort. I thought our eighth-graders really stepped up this year and showed a lot of leadership.”
Playing in their second match of the night, the Generals had to earn their place in the championship game, sweeping Edison by scores of 25-20 in both sets. Caelyn Wise was the top point-getter with eight points for Jackson in the finals.
“I’ll tell you what, I couldn’t be prouder of the girls and really of everybody throughout the season. Williamstown is an excellent team and we have gone back and forth all season,” Jackson head coach Kristen Allodi said. “It could have been anybody’s game, but Williamstown did an excellent job. I’m so proud of the girls, just their determination and their work ethic. You can’t ask for any better players from better families.”
