Flint quite appreciative of Glenville

October 19, 2017

I’m not sure exactly when the first time it was I met John Flint, the current superintendent of Wood County Schools, but I reckon it’s going on nearly two decades. One thing which I always could bank on when it came to seeing him was a friendly smile, a firm handshake and some good conversation about whatever topics of the day might be at hand. Flint, along with five others, is set to be inducted into the Glenville State College Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday. “You know, anytime you are honored by your alma mater it’s very special. I’m appreciative of the ...

Miscues lead to WVU loss

October 9, 2017

The West Virginia Mountaineers incurred their second loss of the season to a good team by an identical 31-24 score. And similar to their season opening loss to Virginia Tech, key special teams miscues led to their downfall at TCU Saturday. With the WVU defense playing well a fumble was lost on a punt return when a Mountaineer player blocked a defender into the returner. The Horned Frogs took advantage of the short field to take a 7-3 lead, and West Virginia was climbing uphill the rest of the afternoon. A miss of a makeable field goal in the second quarter also hurt the cause. Later an ...

My week (almost) without sports

October 10, 2017

Going back as far as I can recall, sports has always been a huge part of my life. Every day has consisted of some interaction with the topic I love maybe too much. Whether watching, playing (recreationally of course), discussing, writing, or covering some event, sports was always on the forefront of my mind. Seven years ago, a special person entered my life as an immediate rival for my affection of the activities I've constructed my career around the past four years. My now-wife overtook anything remotely close to her Sept. 30, when tears streamed down my face as I married her at ...

WVU gets to catch a breather

October 2, 2017

With the Big 12 Conference having a championship game for the first time since West Virginia joined the league the regular season must be concluded by the end of November. The effect on conference teams is that instead of two bye weeks there is only one in 2017. That may not seem to be significant, but when injuries accumulate those weeks off can be important. That was certainly the case for the Mountaineers this past week, as three defensive starters Jacob Long, Ka’Raun White and Toyous Avery would likely have not been able to play if there had been a game this previous weekend. ...

Mountaineer defense slipped up vs. Kansas

September 25, 2017

After a slow start Saturday the West Virginia offense scored on four consecutive long drives to build what appeared to be an insurmountable 28-3 lead late in the second quarter. Everything looked easy as expected against a weak Kansas squad, and Mountaineer fans put up their feet to relax and enjoy the rest of the afternoon. But then our serenity was rudely interrupted. Apparently some of the Mountaineers on the field thought the game was already over as well and were thinking of the flight home. The Jayhawks began shredding the West Virginia defense up and down the field, while the WVU ...

Who are the best pitchers?

September 24, 2017

Major League Baseball enthusiasts know we are among the final games of the season this upcoming week. There are a few division titles and wild cards left to be decided, but we have a good blueprint at most of the teams qualifying for the postseason. Wrapping up another year of baseball also means award season (and plenty of debate) quickly approaches as the 2017 World Series champion is roughly a month-and-a-half away from being crowned. Each award outside of the Rookie of the Year is fairly competitive, but I am focusing on who takes the cake as the best hurler in each league ...
