Weight loss and wrestling

WHEELING — After the deaths of three collegiate wrestlers in the 1990s due to extreme Yo! Yo! Dieting, the NCAA and the National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS) made it their mission to drastically improve their weight management programs to eliminate all unhealthy dietary practices. As a wrestling aficionado, I want to share with you the history of weight management over the years. In the 1960s when I wrestled competitively, we had outstanding wrestling coaches, but they had no national guidelines for us regarding weight reduction. Thus, we used every unsavory and ...

Another draining contest

It was a draining afternoon for West Virginia football fans for a sixth consecutive week, but the Mountaineer defense for the second straight time saved the day to preserve a 28-23 win over Kansas State on Saturday. The WVU offense did manage to tally 28 first half points with quick scoring drives of 1 play, 4 plays and 1 play, but was again inconsistent and failed to protect the football. Four first half turnovers were committed, and for the second straight week the West Virginia offense failed to dent the scoreboard in the second half. Needing just one more score to take control of ...

One wild weekend for Wirt

Mrs. November was at it again this weekend. Veteran Wirt County volleyball head coach Janet Frazier, who affectionately picked up the aforementioned tag following the Tigers’ 10th net crown in 2015, added another state championship to the school’s trophy case on Saturday. Obviously, the first question which had to be asked was whether or not this was it since the orange and black was loaded with six seniors, including daughter Katie — the Tigers’ starting setter the past three seasons. “My husband said I wasn’t allowed to make that decision for a couple of months ...

WVU has more close calls vs. ISU

No one can say it has been boring. For the fifth straight week a Big 12 Conference game for the West Virginia Mountaineers was in doubt in the fourth quarter, with the last four involving one team clinging to leads that were once from 18 to 23 points. This time it was the Mountaineers who were hanging on after building a 20-0 lead over Iowa State early in the second quarter on Saturday. But WVU fans knew better than to be comfortable after the frantic finishes of the previous weeks, and facing a Cyclone team that battled from behind at Oklahoma and had proven that it knew how to ...

MLB not finished just yet

Now that the Houston Astros have claimed the first World Series title in franchise history, many baseball fans are turning their attention to the offseason and hot stove coverage as rumors begin to flow about big-name free agents and trade talk runs amok. This can be a very hard time for fans of the diamond sport as on-the-field action and stat watching disappears until spring training in March. However, the 2017 Major League Baseball season isn’t over just yet. Debate still swirls around the end-of-the-year awards due out any time now, especially the American and National League ...

Flint quite appreciative of Glenville

I’m not sure exactly when the first time it was I met John Flint, the current superintendent of Wood County Schools, but I reckon it’s going on nearly two decades. One thing which I always could bank on when it came to seeing him was a friendly smile, a firm handshake and some good conversation about whatever topics of the day might be at hand. Flint, along with five others, is set to be inducted into the Glenville State College Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday. “You know, anytime you are honored by your alma mater it’s very special. I’m appreciative of the ...
